60 | The Wonder Project teaches primary school kids how to engineer a rocket (powered by water and compressed air), which they design, build, launch and evaluate. Seven reasons why engineering is a great career Engineering New Zealand In today’s fast changing world, engineering is at the forefront of future-focussed thinking and is meeting complex challenges with practical, smart solutions. For young people considering their career options, engineering offers opportunities to make a real difference and grow both personally and professionally. Dr Richard Templer, who is Chief Executive of Engineering New Zealand/Te Ao Rangahau, shares his top reasons why people should consider entering this profession. Engineering is fun For example, our Wonder Project teaches primary school kids how to engineer a rocket (powered by water and compressed air), which they design, build, launch and evaluate. Watching the rockets fly is great fun. Our Wonder Experiences offer senior students industry experience so they can see real-life examples of engineering in action. We believe all young Kiwis can achieve remarkable things and have fun too. Engineering a better future Engineers are leading the development of new technologies that take us towards our Carbon Zero future. This includes wind turbines, smart power grids, electric transportation, energy efficient buildings, biofuels and even more efficient cell phones. By becoming an engineer, you can take positive action to address climate change and help New Zealand transition to a net zero economy. Engineering and Te Ao Māori Engineering New Zealand has launched Kimihia Rangahaua – a journey to embrace Te Ao Māori into Te Ao Rangahau and the wider profession. The phrase ‘Kimihia Rangahaua’ expresses searching intently for truth, clarity and understanding. As part of this journey we have launched a Te Tiriti o Waitangi learning module, have appointed a Te Ao Māori knowledgeable engineer Wharehuia Dixon onto the board and established a specialist advisory group. Engineering is for everyone Engineering New Zealand is part of the Diversity Agenda, an initiative with architects to increase the diversity of people working in the two professions. This includes work on pay equity, gender diversity, neurodiversity and increasing the numbers of Māori and Pacifica. Engineering qualifications are international Engineers in New Zealand can study by doing a diploma (two years), degree (three years) or honours degree (four years). These qualifications are accepted in more than 80 countries around the world as being equivalent to local degrees, thanks to Engineering New Zealand’s membership of the International Engineering Alliance. If travel is on your radar, studying engineering will open many doors to many places. Engineering is choice Whatever your interests, you can follow your passions and find your ideal professional niche. Engineering degree options include artificial intelligence, biomedical, chemical and materials, civil, communications, computer systems, cyber-physical systems, cybersecurity, electrical and electronic, machine learning, mechanical, mechatronics, networked applications, renewable energy systems, robotics, software and structural.
