ENGINEERING Morrow Engineering The history of Morrow Engineering stretches back to 1969, when it opened its doors as a general engineering workshop, offering steam boiler installation and servicing and constructing bridge and road components for the Ministry of Works. Through the 1970’s Morrow Engineering started building fans, heat exchangers, small boilers and boiler flues. Work grew organically as opportunities presented leading to manufacturing coal stokers and wood-waste firing equipment. The customer base also broadened beyond New Zealand’s borders. Another move, in 1980, to its current situation in Harewood, Christchurch, saw the business grow further moving into manufacturing and installing boilers for greenhouses and heat exchangers and undertaking conversions from gas firing to wood-waste firing, as industry demanded. Manager/owner Alistair Morrow says supplying heating for the glass-house sector has been a focus these past 15 years. “We provide the heating systems and we design our own heating technologies. Australia has been an important market for us.” The move by industry away from gas-fired heating to wood-fired has provided Morrow Engineering with plenty of work. “Building wood furnaces to burn lime has been another growth area for us. We have the skills and experience to engineer just about any burning and heating technology industry wants.” Working with Alistair is a small team of engineers, some of whom have been with the business many years, including son Hamish who works as a service and installation engineer. “We’re fortunate to have a large site here so can take on substantial projects in-house.” A focus is to continuously improve the company’s product offering with the goal to further reduce emissions, while providing the best possible operating efficiencies. Morrow Engineering is also very much about caring for the health and wellbeing of staff, with employee medical insurance and a staff superannuation scheme in place. “We know the value of our team. They make our projects come to life and we always try to provide the very best working environment for them.” Morrow Engineering’s reach is now global. The company has supplied steam and electric boilers in many parts of the world, including Tonga, Malaysia, Antarctica, America, China, Australia and Tasmania. “We have been involved with coal- fired and now wood-fired boilers for greenhouses in Australia in locations from Tasmania to Perth.” Alistair is a great believer in supporting the training of new engineers. He says engineering in all its disciplines is a really worthwhile career and encourages those who enjoy problem-solving and creating structures from raw material to consider engineering as a work option. “Engineering is essential to all industry. With the proper skills you can go in any one of a number of directions in your career.” “Building wood furnaces to burn lime has been another growth area for us. We have the skills and experience to engineer just about any burning and heating technology industry wants.” Fully New Zealand owned and operated calibration lab based in Christchurch Proudly supporting Morrow Engineering Unit1 32 Hayton Road, Wigram P: 021 715 257 • www.iil.nz Industrial instruments specialists in pressure equipment calibration and servicing 5 LakesWay, Harewood, Christchurch 8051 | Phone: 03 359 3525 | Email: sales@duralloy.co.nz
