98 | BUILDING Kiwi Modular Homes T T Rachel Graham Saving time and money Size options range from just a room or a self-contained sleepout, up to a four-bedroom home. How does having a home put together on site within a week sound? That is what Kiwi Modular Homes can deliver to its clients. At Kiwi Modular Homes’ Christchurch factory they build houses in sections, which can then be easily transported on a truck to be assembled on site. Kiwi Modular Homes uses the latest building methods coupled with the durability of traditional craftsmanship to create the space ideal for your needs. John Phillips is the director and founder of Kiwi Modular Homes. After thirty years of working as a builder and in the construction sector John Phillips wanted to develop a system to build homes in a more efficient, more sustainable way that offers more value than the traditional building methods. The homes, made of New Zealand timber, are generally built from a standardized plan, but there is room for customization. Size options range from just a room or a self-contained sleepout right up to a four-bedroom home. John says a particularly popular option lately has been the cabins, which are often set up in a backyard as a space to work from home or run a small business. He says the quick set up time on site is a real advantage, with the bulk of the work done off site before his team delivers the modular pieces, assembles the pieces on the foundations and do all the finishing touches ready for you to move in. John says the modular nature of the homes also allows for them to be easily disassembled and relocated or extended by bolting on additional sections if people’s circumstances change. “Someone can start with a one-bedroom house, and then once their equity or income grows, they can go back to the bank borrow a little bit more money and we can come and insert another module or two.” Each module is delivered complete with claddings, roofing, and internal linings fixed and pre-finished, including bathrooms, kitchen, and other internal fittings. Once the design to build process has been completed, the last steps to finish your home on the site can be completed within a week. The modular pieces are also small enough to be moved by a crane, which allows them to get in and over any existing buildings on site. The method is proving popular for builds in isolated or hard to reach sites, with recent builds in Marlborough Sounds, Rakaia Huts, and Nelson Lakes. “We’re also really starting to pick up business is places like Twizel, Ohau and even Queenstown where builders are very expensive, and hard to come by. We can do the majority of the construction work here in Christchurch, where we have got good access to trades people.” Completing the bulk of the work in a factory also mean they are less affected by difficult weather, neither scorching hot days or pouring rain cut short Kiwi Modular Homes’ workdays. Ultimately John hopes with Kiwi Modular Homes people can get into a quality, comfortable home at a good price and in next to no time.
