106 | Bagley Construction T T Richard Loader Nothing short of perfection in Wanaka Private, high-end architectural builds are the focus for Wanaka crafstman-builder Hugh Bagley. BUILDING Wanaka high-end craftsman builder Hugh Bagley has been told that he has a mild case of OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) and furthermore that is why clients have selected him to build their home. Hugh is not so sure that he does actually have OCD, but he admits that he is very particular in the finished product; nothing short of perfection is good enough. “I think the reason Bagley Construction gets the high-end architectural builds comes down to how particular I am. I like to think that any qualified builder can build a bob-standard house, but as soon as you get up to that toptier high-end architectural work, that’s when you must have passion for the work — definitely craftmanship.” Having grown up on a 4500-acre sheep and beef farm out the back of Middlemarch, Hugh says he was always pretty handy on the tools and used to enjoy building and being outdoors helping his dad. “Believe it or not I actually studied Graphics Advertising and Web design at university, but quickly realised that I wasn’t suited for an office job.” The shift to Wanaka 23 years ago was an attempt to save money for overseas travel. Instead, Hugh fell in love with the lakeside adventure town. With overseas travel thrown in, a building apprenticeship was completed over five years, and Wanaka became home and Bagley Construction was formed in 2015. Initially contracting to build spec homes, a steady stream of projects emerged and things just slowly escalated to private high-end architectural builds around Wanaka. “We’ve also established a very good working relationship with Christchurch practice, Threefold Architecture, who have designed three of my own homes. We get to build quite a few of Threefold Architecture’s lovely homes round Wanaka, as well as homes designed by other architects, often because the client has stipulated that.” Hugh says that with more subdivisions opening up in Wanaka there are a number of large 1200sqm sections and the houses tend to be not just highly architectural but much larger. “The majority of our projects are in that $2m region now. I have a couple of big projects in progress at the moment; one is a 500sqm home that includes an indoor pool and gymnasium, and the other is 350sqm. There are number of projects coming up that are between 350 – 400sqm. It’s actually quite nice to build a 220sqm home every now and then.” While Hugh’s reputation for OCD, a can-do attitude and quality craftsmanship are in no small part a key factor in the success of Bagley Construction, there is also his team of two experienced, qualified builders, and two apprentices who share his passion and drive for detail and quality.
