FoodManufacturing: red meat, hygienic design, FMCG & dairy sectors. Utilities: power infrastructure, data centre construction, refrigeration, & energy services. Public Sector: educational property development, PMO establishment & training. During the unprecedented business upheavals and disruptions of the 2020 COVID crisis, Geoffrey Stewart and Iain Ferguson responded by forming a new project management business, Mahere Limited. After careers dedicated to successfully managing a diverse range of projects inNewZealand, South Asia, the Middle East and the UK, they chose a brand that reflected their approach to project success. “We frequently observe projects finishing badly after starting badly, due to a lack of investment in pre-engineering, budgeting or scoping,” says Geoffrey. “Mahere, [‘ma-heri’], in Te reo Māori means a plan or strategy; to make preparations or arrangements in advance, and that’s the essence of what we provide as a project management service.” Iain and Geoffrey bring complementary skills to their clients as project management professionals. Geoffrey is a process engineer by qualification with extensive experience in the food industry and manufacturing, whilst Iain’s experience comes from architectural services to healthcare, hospitality, and public sector building construction management. These skills enable Mahere to manage whole projects from building construction through to plant commissioning. Based in Dunedin, Mahere Limited delivers a range of private-sector commercial projects focusing on the food industry and throughout the Otago/Southland and Canterbury regions and further afield as opportunities arise. In 2023, Geoffrey managed a refrigeration upgrade in Southland for Alliance Group Ltd, and an end-of-line packing machinery project in East Otago. Iain completed the upgrade of Silver Fern Farms’ Pareora stockyards, the demolition of brick and asbestos-contaminated buildings, and currently managing the redevelopment of a prominent heritage building site in Dunedin. These projects all involved tender preparation and management, Engineer to Contract services safety and communications management, budget and schedule adherence, with Geoffrey and Iain taking the roles of client-side project managers, reporting on timelines, costs and risks for the client. Geoffrey says as a boutique and experienced business, with best practice industry tools such as Procore and Smartsheet, means that a sharper and yet agile service can be provided to the client.
