T T from page 116 “Engaging a designer is an investment and my role is to push boundaries, to get a stunning result, not simply follow the market and the current trends of the moment.” Based in Merivale, Christchurch, Detail by Davinia Sutton specialises in high-end bespoke interior architecture, while adding intricate details into every aspect of design. She said listening to each client was key to the company’s success. “It’s about personally tailoring to the client’s needs in an architectural context, and delivering this for them. Engaging a designer is an investment and my role is to push boundaries, to get a stunning result, not simply follow the market and the current trends of the moment.” As the business owner and creative director, Davinia views her role as an extension of the architect’s service, ensuring that every design aligns with the home’s architectural foundations. She said the team’s collaborative approach goes beyond the studio, thanks to the talented architects, manufacturers and tradespeople who support their many visions. And, those visions are not just limited to projects in Christchurch - they span the length of New Zealand from Cable Bay in Northland to Central Otago and Southland. At the core of the company’s design philosophy lies the belief that function is paramount, while incorporating spaces that inspire. “A good design will push the envelope, yet also deliver great functionality.” And, no matter whether the client is redesigning for personal enjoyment or resale, the team at Detail by Davinia Sutton believe in the importance of considering the big picture and investing in long-term solutions. Davina said, while reflecting on her journey so far, the words of Martin Luther King Jr come to mind: “The greatest journeys all start with a single step”. “When you stand at the bottom of a mountain, you can rarely see a clear route to the top. It is too far away and the path too twisty and hidden behind obstacles. The only way to climb the sucker is to start and then keep putting on foot in front of the other, one step at a time.” Davinia credits her family for keeping her grounded, despite the demands of a successful business. “Family time is so precious to me, especially with a young family. Having a business can be demanding on this and often friends comment ‘I don’t know how you do it’. “I try to keep a balance, so investing time back into our little people is the best way to spend any of my spare time,” she said.
