DESIGN Rebecca O’Fee’s journey into interior design has been as diverse as her creativity. With a firm belief that excellent interior design starts at the planning stage of any new build, she emphasises the importance of engaging a designer early in the process to add lasting value to a high-spec residential project. “Start thinking about engaging an interior designer early on. The sooner the better. Right from the get-go, working with the architect and the builder to really understand the layout and floor plan and the flow of the house.” As the owner of Mapua based O’Fee Interiors, she, along with her builder husband Tyler of O’Fee Contracting, has successfully designed, built, and sold a few spec homes in the Tasman district, including notable projects in Redvale Estate Redwood Valley, Harley Road, and Shirtcliff Lane, Appleby. Working seamlessly with architects and builders from the inception of a project, Rebecca believes that understanding the layout, floor plan, and flow of the house is crucial. “Investing in design from the get-go makes other decisions easier down the track. Saves you having to correct things after the fact. “Obviously, you want it to look great and feel great. I believe this starts with being cohesive and achieving flow throughout all aspects of the home. Otherwise, it’s just not going to feel like its whole or complete.” By involving herself in these early decisions, Rebecca ensures a harmonious integration of fit-out, lighting, and décor choices. While currently enjoying maternity leave with their two-month-old daughter Belle and looking after their four-year-old son Frank, Rebecca reflects on her unconventional journey into interior design. From living in Japan for six and a half years as a child to studying with the NZ Institute of Interior Design to events management and managing a disability service in Karratha, Pilbara, Australia - her path eventually led her back to the Tasman district with Tyler. Despite the diverse experiences, she expresses a profound passion for interior design, describing it as an inescapable calling. Rebecca’s journey showcases the intersection of diverse life experiences, education, and a deep passion for interior design. Her story emphasizes the importance of early engagement with an interior designer to create homes that not only look and feel great but also stand the test of time. As she continues to balance her roles as a mother and a designer, Rebecca O’Fee remains dedicated to the art of creating homes that reflect both functionality and aesthetics. Emerging design and décor trends, tend to be more about creating warmer, more personalised environments using natural raw materials and imperfect objects of affection. “Trends come and go but I’m a strong advocate for having what you love around you. Décor and furniture pieces that last and have meaning for the owner,” she says. O’Fee Interiors welcomes enquiries from anyone needing help with all aspects of interior design whether it be new home builds, large or small-scale renovations, or a single room makeover.
