We were a very large supplier to the San Francisco County, and for LA County we managed five hundred of their vehicles as temporary accommodation.” With people unable to travel abroad, effectively trapped in their own countries, Grant and his team responded by looking at how they could drive sales of their RV fleet, a strategy that worked very well. “Finally as we were coming out of those first lockdowns we did a Get Moving campaign in New Zealand, which went absolutely gang-busters. We did really cheap rentals to get people moving around the country and try to reignite the tourism industry. That campaign sold out within four hours for a four month promotion. All of that came down to the team reflecting on what we were good at, changing what we were doing and being really fast and agile. It was great — everyone in the company did really well.” There was also the merger with Apollo, THL’s closest competitor and an Australian listed entity, with 50% of the shareholding owned by the founding family. “We saw an awesome opportunity from a synergy perspective. It took a year to get through the commerce commission both in New Zealand and Australia. We’ve been together for just over a year now and it’s going extremely well. That has been another key part of the strategic development of the company.” Reflecting upon THL’s recovery, Grant says credit must be given to the natural forces of tourism reopening, but says the THL team’s change adaptability must also be recognised. “Whilst we are corporate and global we’re also trying to stay a little more entrepreneurial so that we’re agile and adaptable. Things like the merger with Apollo, changing some of the ways we did our manufacturing and tidying up some parts of the business, all came from challenging the business, challenging the underlying problem statements and being change tolerant.” Excited about the future of global tourism, Grant says THL’s outlook into the next twelve months is very positive from an RV rentals perspective. “Inherently the industry is in a good place. It’s in good enough place that it is still looking to do things differently from a sustainability perspective, and challenging itself. “In New Zealand we now have a government that is acknowledging the opportunity for tourism growth, supporting that growth and seeing that the tourism industry can really help the country get through the tough economic times.” Feel at home, wherever you roam.
