DO OUR READERS KNOW YOU EXIST? “We were hungry for work, and secured the work that has enabled us to grow our staff and give them opportunities to step up and manage themselves well, under good guidance. That’s what I believe is pushing our company forward and where our success is. Our growth, and success at the awards says we’re doing the right things and developing the right team culture. People want to work for us. If you’ve got the team, you can do the work.” Connor Jones Group now employs twenty-seven staff, of which sixteen are in building, four in engineering and the rest in management office roles. Tom says establishing Connor Jones Group was driven by an ambition to provide better solutions and to challenge the status quo in terms of quality product. “I was a client-side project manager in construction and there was such an issue with quality within the industry, and what was acceptable in terms of projects. Mediocre was acceptable which frustrated me. Delivering quality is not just about the product you are handing over, it is also about the way the project is managed. Having client-side project management experience I got to learn how to communicate money and expectations well with people. That relieves a lot of pressure at the end and that is what we bring to our business.” Tom’s fabrication and consultancy experience is complemented with Chris’s building and fabrication trade background. The business was established to deliver both residential/light commercial construction and engineering projects. While the building and engineering companies work independently, the engineering side also support the building company. “The independent engineering work is all commercial. Our key clients are Lion Nathan — Speights Brewery and Emerson’s Brewery. That work involves a lot of process pipework and tanks. We also work with tier one contractors. Our building work is 80% residential with projects ranging from bathroom and kitchen renovations, home extensions, really gnarly basement conversions right through to high-end architectural builds. There’s so much structural and architectural steel work in a build and the ability to complete that steel work in-house leads to the quality element, where connection details and fiddly brace details aren’t missed. We also do a little bit of light commercial work.” Tom says that a key benefit of working in Dunedin is that it is a central location for much of its Otago based projects. “It is also essentially a small village and word of mouth travels pretty fast. Building good relationships often results in referrals.”
