Marc McSkimming and his father Stewart had amassed quite a history working in the heavy machinery industry when in 2011 they decided the time was right to cut their own path in the industry they knew so well; importing, exporting and selling the full range of heavy machinery and equipment for the mining and construction machinery. “Stewart and I had a very good working knowledge of the industry and had also built up very good contacts and relationships with overseas brokers and machinery owners, as well as buyers in New Zealand,” says Marc. “While lots of OEM dealers and brokers play in the 1.5 – 30 tonne space, our point of difference was a focus on the bigger bulldozers, motor scrapers, excavators, and mining trucks. Our core customer sectors are mining, quarrying, and heavy civil construction. We buy and sell throughout New Zealand, but we also sell into Australia, Egypt, Pakistan and the Pacific Islands, mostly from New Zealand.” With machines typically imported to order, while some machinery and equipment is brought in brand new, the majority is imported second hand from all over the globe. “Where it comes from depends on the machine type,” explains Marc. “There is differential pricing all around the world for different machinery, which effects the second hand pricing, and that influences the country that we source specific types of machinery from. We have a range of stock displayed in our Rolleston yard, and that varies all the time depending on what machinery we have brought into the country or that is being sold on behalf of other customers. We broker quite a few deals locally.” Over the thirteen years that Global Tractors & Mechanical have been operating, Marc and Stewart have complemented the sales of machinery with comprehensive mechanical servicing and machinery valuations. “We have a team of three qualified and very experienced diesel mechanics who also undertake site repairs from Mid-North Canterbury. While major repairs are carried out in the workshop, being able to resolve a machinery breakdown for a client is critical to their ongoing business operation and our skilled technicians will travel to the client’s worksite fully equipped to handle mechanical repairs “While lots of OEM dealers and brokers play in the 1.5 – 30 tonne space, our point of difference was a focus on the bigger bulldozers, motor scrapers, excavators, and mining trucks.” right where the client them. Our service vehicles are mobile workshops, ensuring that we have everything needed to address the client’s machinery’s needs, keeping their downtime to a minimum.” Marc says a customised maintenance plan can also be drawn up to ensure the machinery operates reliably, minimising downtime and maximising productivity. “We have the specialised tools and expertise needed to handle even the heaviest loads safely and efficiently. For the rebuilding and repair of components and parts for heavy machinery, we offer a heavy tooling service. Our mechanics will meticulously restore and refurbish critical components, ensuring the machinery operates at peak performance.” Specialising in the valuation of earthmoving equipment and whole fleet valuations, Marc provides expert valuations for a wide range of heavy machinery, from single machines to entire fleets including on highway trucks, utes and most industry tooling in-between. “We are affiliated members of the New Zealand Property Institute - Plant and Machinery, and we’re Panel Valuers for most banks and lenders in the country.” Marc acknowledges that underpinning thirteen years of successful business operation has been the relationships that have been forged and maintained. “Relationships is about trust and being honest. If you say you are going to do something, then do it. If there’s something wrong, then you deal with it straight away, and that’s what maintains relationships.”
