Switch Lighting is designing, engineering and manufacturing residential LED lighting solutions for both inside and outside the home and is one of the first companies in New Zealand to do so. Co-owners Gerard Woods and Jon Maunsell began designing and building LED downlights in 2009 and now employ over 40 people at their purpose-built premise on Nelson’s Bolt Road where there’s production facilities, a showroom plus an educational space for introducing architects, lighting designers and engineers, electricians and home owners on how to incorporate LED lighting into homes. “Many people aren’t aware of the rapid advances happening in Smart lighting. By educating architects, designers, and electricians, everyone can benefit from the sort of dynamic lighting that used to only be found in high-end houses. Homeowners can come in and see how Smart lighting looks and operates in a home environment,” says Gerard. “Lighting has really changed and everyone can now access architectural style lighting. People want to be able to control their lighting, and we’ve developed a single dimmable light fitting that can change light temperature from a really cool white of 4000 Kelvin (a measure for colour temperature) to a rich warm light at 1800 Kelvin. We have the biggest range of colour temperature fittings in New Zealand as we’ve designed and manufactured these here in Nelson.” Lighting goes a long way in making a house a home as light impacts your mood and how you feel in a space. Switch is invested in human centric lighting and how different colour temperatures can make you feel. To ensure you get the best lighting for your new build or reno, Switch offer a no obligation free design service to ensure you get good information about the possibilities of LED lighting early. Lighting is often overlooked until the end of a build but it’s important to consider this early to ensure you are able to utilise the right products in the right place. Everything manufactured at Switch Lighting is LED which is a more sustainable and environmentally friendly solution to the traditional incandescent bulb and compact fluorescent lighting. LED light fittings last longer, reduce both your power bill and carbon footprint and are insulation safe. Switch Lighting predominantly manufactures downlights but has diversified into indirect lighting that passes light across the ceiling and has just launched a full range of garden lighting to support and enhance landscaping. The company has also launched their first range of pendant lighting tailored for high-end architectural décor. “The technology is constantly changing. Jon and I will come up with an idea, and then come up with a solution. We have six engineers in Research and Development so our concepts can come to life, believes Gerard. “We work closely with architects, lighting designers and electricians as they are the ones who are meeting homeowners. We get them into R&D to show them our latest products before we send them off for final prototyping. It’s a great way to make sure that it’s a product that customers really want, and that it’s going to be easy to install.” Switch lighting showrooms are in Nelson, Christchurch, and Auckland with lighting consultants across the country.
