Industrial coatings extends the overall lifetime of materials Shotover Engineering has been servicing the engineering and structural steel requirements of the rapidly growing Wakatipu basin for over 30 years. From a large, purpose-built workshop in Queenstown, the company is producing steelwork for the construction industry and supporting the town’s ageing infrastructure through repairs and maintenance to contractor’s equipment. General Manager, Adam Matheson, says the company is continually expanding to meet the growth demands of the popular Central Otago town and is now the largest and longest-serving engineering workshop in the area. “If it’s made of steel, chances are we have the tools to do the job,” says Adam. “The company started in 1992 and has grown from three staff to 18. We produce a lot of steel for high-end houses in the Wakatipu Basin and that’s showing no signs of slowing down.” “We also look after the companies that are keeping Queenstown’s infrastructure going. We keep their machines running so they can do their work. The infrastructure is old and struggling to keep pace with the demands as the population increases.” Longevity in the business means the crew at Shotover Engineering have the experience and knowledge to tackle any job. The modern workshop is fully equipped and is capable of handling most of the engineering requirements that arise in Queenstown. Hydraulic hoses are manufactured or repaired at the workshop. They’re equipped with truck lifters which safely lift buses and heavy transport vehicles at the workshop, resulting in a faster turnaround. A shopfront beside the workshop retails a range of bolts and fastenings, spare parts for trailers and agricultural equipment, welders and consumables quality snow chains and a selection of bearings. The company has a range of lifting equipment for hire including their crane truck and a highly specialist crawler crane. The company is also the Queenstown agent for EziSwap gas bottles. Shotover Engineering is committed to developing young apprentices at the workshop with two or three apprentices on the go at any time. Serving an apprenticeship at Shotover Engineering gives the engineers an opportunity to experience a wide range of engineering disciplines. The work is incredibly varied, which teaches apprentices to think around a problem and not back away from a challenge. “Lots of people want to move down here and there’s plenty of work available but the shortage of housing makes it really difficult. “We like to encourage young people from the area to apprentice with us, and often the school will get in touch with us about a student that would be suited to this work. “Once they’ve finished their apprenticeship, we encourage them to work away otherwise they’re always the apprentice. Hopefully they’ll come back to their home town and work with us when they’re older,” laughs Adam. “I started with Shotover Engineering as an apprentice in 2000, so it’s good for new guys to see that there’s a pathway from the bottom to the top.
