Builtwell Construction BUILDING In the words of his wife Trudie, Builtwell Construction co-director Jason (Jay) Millar is fussy with detail as well as the subcontractors he trusts on a job. “Our quality comes out of 18 years of relationships with people in Wanaka,” Trudie says. “When you have relationships with people, they want to please you, they want your ongoing work and trust that you’ve built up. It’s hugely based on relationship.” That strong personal touch is reinforced Builtwell Construction’s small team of three tradesmen which includes Jay who has 30 years’ experience in the industry. “Since I’ve been here I’ve been mainly doing houses, but when I was at Mount Maunganui I was mainly doing industrial buildings. We were making our own [concrete] tilt slabs as well as building with prefabricated steel portals, Jay says. Because of his experience and background, Trudie describes Jay as an incredible teacher with a great depth of knowledge. “He’s quite particular to be honest, and people mention that about him, that he really cares about the finished product. That’s why we call the business Builtwell Construction.” This passion for quality and strong attention to detail does not go unnoticed by apprentices Jay trains, and is a benchmark that can serve them for life, he says. One of Builtwell Construction’s staff who qualified as a builder at the end of last year is Brazilian Gerson Perin who Jay originally met while skateboarding. Together, the Builtwell team love to tackle boutique and lifestyle residential projects such as a lock- -and-leave holiday home completed for friends of Jay and Trudie who live in Whangamata. In keeping with the client’s brief, the 170 square metre house built in Wanaka’s Northlake subdivision is minimalistic and has a single pavilion with an attached single garage. The site required a retaining wall which was achieved with tilt panels with I-beams slotted between as a feature. Inside, the high vaulted ceiling has two skylights with the north elevation of the kitchen/ lounge area incorporating full-width glazing as well as cathedral windows above, leading to a portico and a deck outside. Because of the amount of glazing, this elevation required structural steel to provide sufficient bracing. The home’s exterior includes cladding and roofing in Kahu, a new angular high-ribbed form of traditional corrugate profile, coloured in dark toned Flaxpod. This is complemented with dark stained thermally treated timber including on the garage and portico lattice along the kwila hardwood deck. Heating is provided by a heat pump as well as a fire which is usually optional. While Builtwell Construction sets a high bar both for its own team and for anyone working on a project, there was an added element to this build, Jay says. “They really like it and they love all the workmanship on it. It turned out really nice.” He adds the tongue-in-cheek comment, “he’s actually a builder himself so we had to make sure we got it right.” In addition to completing new builds, Builtwell Construction is happy to undertake renovations and light commercial work. Jay and his team are looking forward to another busy year, with work to date including two house builds, one of which Jay hopes will be for his own family, and a renovation. “When you have relationships with people, they want to please you, they want your ongoing work and trust that you’ve built up. It’s hugely based on relationship.” The Source For All Your Plumbing Needs.
