CNC machines are a tool of choice for many joineries because they enhance many processes, including machining laminates processing solid wood, MDF/particle board panels and composite materials with little or no waste, greater accuracy and less manual labour. Te Anau has experienced consistent growth, with the development of new subdivisions in recent decades driving demand for construction and related services. Fiordland Joinery is owned and run by Simon and Rachel Irwin. It was a big decision to commit to the purchase of the machine, Rachel says. “It will help us create efficiencies and streamline production.” This technology allows Simon and the team to have a better balance between time in the workshop and working on other aspects of the business. While this modern machinery and automation is extremely beneficial, Fiordland Joinery also offers bespoke craftsmanship for those who want to have something truly unique created. Fiordland Joinery provides free measuring and quotations, with designs and details generated in 3D software which creates virtual models, making it easy to visualise the layout of spaces, cabinets, cupboards, other storage solutions and cabinetry in any area of a house or business. Today’s designers and home builders are spoilt for choice when it comes to creating spaces with a variety of materials, hardware, fittings and surfaces, while LED lighting is commonly used for both functional and aesthetic elements in the design of spaces. Fiordland Joinery works with high quality products such as Blum, Hafele, Silestone, Panelform, Hallmark Doors, Elite Hardware and can offer a great variety of benchtop surfaces such Laminex, marble, engineered stone and stainless steel. Its expertise covers residential and commercial projects including kitchens, laundries, wardrobes, bathrooms, stairwells and various door options from small scale work to larger projects such as new motels and grand homes, working closely with clients to achieve a result that everyone involved is proud of. Based in Te Anau and covering Te Anau basin as well as Central Otago, the company was employing two staff other than Rachel and Simon, but this year is planning to take on an apprentice who has been gaining work experience with Fiordland Joinery through the Gateway programme. “We have a close knit team that works well together and know what the expectations are around the quality of the finished product. We also we really appreciate the collaboration and team work with the trades, architects, interior designers which are also behind the success of each project. ‘We can be working with a client for quite a while and get to know them, and it’s nice to see them happy with the end result.” “This year (2023) it’s been hectic and we’ve had a lot of different kinds of projects that have been quite technical. “We’ve done motel units, architectural builds, first home builds and renovations; there has been a lot of variety and a lot of different timelines to manage as well.” Fiordland Joinery works across residential and commercial sectors. “A smart new entranceway for them, plus in a separate school build job we replaced 200 sq. metres of clear lite roofing cover at Fairfield School with trafficable clear lite which was finished within a week.” A more comprehensive light commercial project completed last year was for Ocula Optometrists Arrowtown. This was a month-long contract and encompassed a full strip out and refit of the premise which had been a restaurant. “ This was a full interior strip out including wall linings and framing, then we built new clinical and consulting rooms and shop front with display cabinets and completed all new fittings throughout.” A standout new residential build completed by Structur Building Ltd last year was a $2m new build four-bedroom family home in Mosgiel for plumbing company owner Matt Maley. This 290 sq. metre home is a high spec, high end home which showcases the very latest in electrical plumbing features. “The home is clad in polished block and fibre cement vertical weatherboard and the whole house is plumbed in high end plumbing systems with electrical tapware and all the smart tech.” 022 362 6916 www.designmake.co.nz We are a design-focused studio committed to sustainable practices.
