| 117 The major overhaul saw the existing 1970s’ buildings replaced with a new administration and teaching block, adjoining hall, library and a new turf in the $13 million redevelopment. COMMUNITY Arthur Street School: Naylor Love “We still have the 1900s’ infant school building that is awaiting Government funding for an upgrade.” The rebuild replaces the 1970s’ buildings that had been in place, which were cold and dark. “The benefits are massive; there is something to be said for light, warmth, technology and infrastructure, modernisation and the flexibility of the spaces.” Kim pushed hard to have individual cell classes. “We had to fight hard, because at the start of the design phrase, the preferred Ministry design was for classrooms of big barn styles. Now they are going back to individual teaching spaces. “We have four hubs with nine teaching spaces and break-out spaces for learning. We also have the flexibility for communal learning too.” Ignite Architecture was tasked with creating the design. “The architect, Jeremy, was someone that listened to what was important,” says Kim. “We sit in the town belt and the trees are really important to us. He brought nature into the design and made sure the buildings fit within the environment. “The students love it. They love coming to school and take pride in the space.” During the design phase Kim was told to design a school that would be fit for the next 50 years, and she took this challenge headon and paid attention to the small details, including accessibility. “We have a student who uses a wheelchair, and a member of the teaching staff also, and yet we didn’t have self-opening doors for wheelchairs, so I pushed for that and we got them.” The end result speaks for itself, a school that is fit for purpose for its community now – and well into the future. • Residential Glazing • Balustrades • Showers • Showerdomes PH: (03) 455 6134 | 45 Otaki St, Dunedin | www.aburnsglass.co.nz Aburns Glass Proud to support Arthur Street School Project: Naylor Love Full fencing service, from rural fencing to residential & commercial, retaining walls and more.
