The company also won the Excellence in Technology and Innovation award and was a finalist across multiple major categories. Greg Donaldson Contracting REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Greg Donaldson Contracting has taken out the Supreme Award at the 2026 ANZ Business of the Year Awards after being named a finalist across multiple major categories. The biennial awards, first held in 2022, recognise excellence across Mid Canterbury’s business community. “Winning the Supreme Award is incredibly humbling,” says Greg Donaldson, founder and managing director of Greg Donaldson Contracting. “To be recognised across so many categories reflects the depth of our team and the standards we set for ourselves every day.” In addition to the Supreme Award, Greg Donaldson Contracting won Excellence in Technology and Innovation, and was highly commended in both Excellence in Primary Industries – Large, and Excellence in Environmental Sustainability. It was also a finalist in Excellence in Workplace Wellbeing, while Greg’s son, general manager Michael Donaldson, won the Emerging Business Leader Award. Established more than 30 years ago, the Ashburton-based civil earthworks and agricultural contracting company has built a reputation for quality workmanship, innovative thinking and strong community values. From large-scale land development to environmentally responsible waste solutions, it has become a cornerstone of the district’s infrastructure and primary industries. “At the end of the day, our philosophy has always been simple – do it once, do it right,” says Greg. “That applies whether we’re undergrounding power, supporting farmers or investing in our staff.” A defining innovation for the business has been its patented mole plough technology, developed after a personal tragedy inspired Greg to find a safer way to underground electricity. The equipment allows cabling, fibre and water pipes to be installed deeper and faster than traditional trenching, dramatically reducing disruption and cost. It was born out of a determination to prevent accidents,” says Greg. “What started as an idea in the workshop became something that’s transformed how we approach undergrounding across the region.” The technology has played a key role in removing overhead power lines along major routes, including State Highway 1 and parts of State Highway 77, improving safety, resilience and visual amenity. Judges recognised this forward-thinking approach in awarding it the Excellence in Technology and Innovation category. Environmental sustainability has also been central to its growth. Through the Ashburton Eco Park, it has diverted more than 10,000 tonnes of green waste and demolition material from landfill. The facility operates one of the country’s few air curtain burners, significantly reducing emissions compared with open burning or burial. “We believe waste doesn’t have to be wasted,” says Greg. “If we can turn a problem into a resource, whether that’s renewable energy or biochar for soil health, then that’s a win for everyone.” Workplace wellbeing formed another pillar of its awards success. Staff members receive company-funded health insurance, access to counselling services and opportunities for professional development. Initiatives such as Fun Day Fridays, a Christmas Savings Club and paid attendance at mental health events demonstrate its commitment to a supportive culture. “If you look after your people, they’ll look after the business,” says Greg. “Our low staff turnover tells us we’re getting that balance right.” Greg says the Emerging Business Leader Award win for his son Michael signals a strong future for the company. Having worked his way up from the field after qualifying as a mechanic, Michael now leads as general manager, balancing operational excellence with a focus on staff wellbeing and innovation.
