30 | Firm all in again for a great cause I Am Hope Foundation’s Mike King and Fowler Homes Queenstown’s Jason McGirr on site at Conifer Lane. Fowler Homes Queenstown: I Am Hope Foundation REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT “If we can have an entire generation who realise there are other options and people who care out there, self-harm will reduce as an option taken,” he says. The first charity build raised “a massive amount for a small company”, and the aim this time is to do better, market conditions allowing. The site itself is spectacular, but demanding, with unobstructed views of Lake Wakatipu and The Remarkables. “The site’s amazing, but very challenging to build on,” Jason says. “Months and months of work have gone in to date. We’re about six months into the project. We’re just starting to box up the second-floor foundation.” The home itself will be a high-spec, threelevel Southern Lakes build: four bedrooms, three bathrooms, big open‑plan kitchen/ dining/living, and generous balconies, wrapped in Colorsteel and glass to make the most of 180‑degree views. Despite pressure across the construction sector, Jason says support for the Hope Home has been strong, driven by a mix of goodwill and long-standing relationships. He says the project comes at a cost to the business in terms of time and resources, but it’s one he believes is worth carrying because of the scale of the benefit delivered through I Am Hope. “Our little bit of hurt helps that many,” he says. “It’ll come back around.” Behind the charity project is a business that has grown fast. Jason, Jen and Damian took over Fowler Homes Queenstown in 2019, and quickly scaled the operation, before going on to acquire Fowler Homes New Zealand. There are seven office staff members in town, including Jason and Jen, and about 25 builders, who work exclusively for Fowler Homes on the ground. “We treat all our contractors’ and suppliers’ businesses like our own,” Jason says. “I want them and their families to know we are continuously working to have stable ongoing work so they can focus on what we all want to be doing – creating homes for our clients and community.” For clients, he says, that stability translates directly into delivery.
