T T to page 44 REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT The rich old Birthday Reef near Reefton on the West Coast is coming back to life with Australian company Endura Mining planning to deliver between 50,000 and 60,000 ounces of gold annually from its Snowy River mine from December this year. It’s expected to bring a further boon to Reefton, and efforts are under way to attract and accommodate staff. “Our first priority is to attract as many of the right people on the West Coast as we can to build a longterm residential workforce,” says Endura’s Vice-President of Corporate Development, Bryan O’Hara. “We’ve presently got 85 people working onsite, and by early next year we plan to ramp that up to over 200. We’ve employed a number recently, including seven new starters at Snowy River in January, but the real ramp-up will be in the second half of this year.” That’s when mining equipment from Swedish multi-national Sandvik will start arriving: jumbos, cable bolters, loaders and trucks. Already completed are the twin 3.2km declines that follow the old-timers’ diggings to the rich Birthday Reef, with exploration continuing there at depth. “We now have access to the ore and we’re doing the development which will allow us consistently to mine up to 350,000 tonnes a year,” Bryan says. Such will be the demand for accommodation that Endura Mining is looking to establish a camp to house between 80 and 100 miners.
