W. Rietveld (Otago) Ltd For the first couple of years, he operated as a sole trader offering contract labour, but after two years he was able to take on his first staff member. The business flourished, and Duane was able to obtain agencies for three of the world’s top marine engine manufacturers: Japan’s Yanmar, Sweden’s Scania, and South Korea’s Daewoo Doosan. In addition, there were a couple of generator agents, Mase and Onan, along with agents for Jabsco and Johnson Pump & Accessories. The Yanmar dealership, in particular, allows Duane to offer its engines to a broad range of commercial and private boaties, from the compact 10kW model for pleasure boats to the big power plant for commercial vessels. Scania offers a range of engines, from 162kW to 840kW, whose capabilities include propelling planing vessels, both commercial and recreational, to pushing heavy barges upstream and managing heavy-duty auxiliary applications. Daewoo’s Doosan Infracore offers a further extensive range, from 117kW to 810kW. “And between our three authorised distributorships we offer a selection of marine power units that can suit any imaginable application,” Duane says. While Duane’s work has frequently taken him round parts of New Zealand, it’s also seen him head overseas to Azerbaijan, Dubai and the United Arab Emirates, performing maintenance on a customer vessel that was doing oil research. DG Engineering’s workshop is on the western shore of Sawyers Bay, which gained its name for the number of sawing pits around it processing native timbers from the local forests. Sawyers Bay is an inlet on the western shore of Otago Harbour—created by an extinct volcano— between Roseneath and Port Chalmers, and as far back as 1877 was connected to Dunedin by rail, though that service has long since disappeared. The harbour, founded on the sealing and whaling trades, and later expanding on the back of wool, meat and coal exports, is still the main freight gateway to Otago, as well as hosting an extensive fishing fleet and swarms of recreational boats.
