The company now collaborates with high-profile organisations, such as port management, CWF Hamilton Jet, coastguards, fishing companies and large commercial operators. In just a few short years in business, since owner Dylan Cox took on staff, DC Marine has obtained exclusive dealership and service agency agreements with renowned providers such as Volvo Penta, Scania Marine, Tohatsu Outboards and OceanVolt electric drive systems. The company now operates a commercial vessel and is expanding into a range of specialised on-water services, bringing existing skillsets to on-water scenarios, such as salvage operations and water- based asset maintenance. Dylan has had a love of sailing from a young age, inspired by his grandfather, and went on to study boat building, and gaining skipper qualifications, before working on super yachts around the globe. After returning to New Zealand to undertake further study in marine engineering, he started DC Marine, and more recently partnered with mechanical engineer William Kingsbury as co-owner to offer a full range of services. You can’t just pour diesel into the sea, for example,” Dylan says. “There is a huge culture and focus around Health & Safety and environmental impacts.” The company keeps these values front and centre, and that is reflected in the ongoing relationships it has built in the marine industry. “We take a lot of pride in our environmental and Health & Safety compliance.” Team culture is another strong point, and the staff he employs are all people that have wanted to come and work with him. They work hard, but have fun too. For their Christmas party the plan was to come up with the wackiest idea for a day out, including taking old life rafts down the Avon River through the centre of Christchurch. That didn’t quite make the Health & Safety cut. The future goal of the business is to expand organically – particularly in the area of marine engineering, which has been growing stronger in recent years. “The challenge for us is not to be stagnant,” Dylan says.. There are some even bigger projects in the pipeline, but Dylan is keeping those under wraps for now, until the contracts are secured, but he is excited about what the future holds.
