66 | INFRASTRUCTURE Fulton Hogan T T Aimee Wilson Otago water projects going well Fulton Hogan has played an active role in a two-year programme of work to deliver those upgrades to water and wastewater systems in the Upper Clutha. Civil infrastructure experts Fulton Hogan are making great headway with two new major water and wastewater projects in the Upper Clutha. A water-quality risk affecting Queenstown’s supply in late 2023 prompted QLDC to take urgent action to improve existing watertreatment plants in the district, to provide safe and fully compliant drinking water through the installation of UV treatment systems. Contracted by QLDC, Fulton Hogan has played an active role in a two-year programme of work to deliver those upgrades, most recently working with specialist water-filtration experts to design and build a new drinkingwater treatment plant to supply Luggate. QLDC infrastructure delivery & engineering manager, Simon Leary, says the rollout of new treatment measures across the district was sped up by re-using existing equipment where possible, and focusing on key non-negotiable upgrades. The approach brought improvements in Luggate well ahead of an initially predicted 2028 delivery date, which included providing access to a new water source through two new supply bores, new pipes to connect the infrastructure to the existing network, the new ultraviolet (UV) treatment solution, and development of a new, long-term reservoir site. Fulton Hogan also has multiple crews working across the Upper Clutha on a major wastewater pgrade for the area, and construction of the pipelines and pump stations are due to be completed in early 2027 – a year earlier than anticipated. Simon says crews operating in different sites concurrently has helped reduce the potential disruption of the work, “and the sooner we have these wastewater upgrades in place, the sooner communities in Hāwea, Albert Town, and Wānaka benefit from increased capacity and resilience in the network”.
