J & M Built BUILDING Having met when they were both doing their apprenticeship with a company specialising in high-end, architectural residential builds, six years ago Jamie Ellis and Matt Radburnd joined forces to set up their award-winning construction company, J & M Built. They have been qualified for 10 years, and having worked together before and after qualifying, they knew they shared the same ideas about wanting to build quality, high-end houses for good people, explains Jamie. “We want to build homes for people that they want to stay in forever and enjoy.” What started as just the two of them has now grown to a team of 10, including two highly experienced builders, who trained them as apprentices – James Hinton, and Paul Nelson, who has been building for 45 years. Everyone they have employed over the six years is still working with them, including their first apprentice, Latham Kelly-Foleni, now qualified. And everyone they have worked for over the years has recommended them to others, from their first build in Okains Bay on Christchurch’s Banks Peninsula through to the high-end architectural homes they are now building in town. “When you build with J & M Built you’re building with Jamie and Matt themselves, who both still enjoy their time on the tools,” explains Matt. “We have a physical hand in every job, and we have a trusted team, which every client has complimented us on. We pride ourselves on our open communication, and we understand that building a house is big money, so we’re very open with costings and happy to walk through design choices if they need help, or to recommend an architect.” They are equally up front when it comes to scheduling. Rather than leave the site once a build has started, they will hold off to ensure they are there for as long as it takes, treating it as if they were going to live in it themselves, concentrating on getting the detail right, whether it’s a deck, a renovation, extension, or new build. “We work with architects and designers to build our clients beautiful, functional homes, without losing sight of the budget,” says Jamie. “We use our project-management and hands-on construction experience to offer an end-to-end client experience that we want them to enjoy, knowing they can trust the quality of our workmanship and leave everything to us.” In between the architectural renovations and new builds, Jamie and Matt have started their own architectural developments, with their most recent due to go on the market in May. Having bought a 1200sqm section in Weston Road, St Albans, they then found a new home for its 70 mature fruit trees in Tai Tapu, before demolishing the existing 1960s’ Summerhill Stone house and salvaging all the materials. Well on their way to completion in its place are an architecturally designed single-storey house and a double-storey house, carefully planned to look and feel different from each other in size, shape, and colour palette. The single storey’s combination of lichen Colorsteel with cream stone and a natural brown abodo that silvers off, is beautifully offset by the two-storey’s sandstone Colorsteel, light grey stone, and black abodo. Highly specified kitchens and bathrooms make for easy living in these houses, which feature J&M’s trademark laid-back luxury and sophistication. Built with energy efficiency in mind, and designed to allow individual privacy or effortless entertaining, depending on the mood, these two high-end homes, built just as they would be if Jamie and Matt were planning to move in themselves, will be ready for people to view in May.
