Kelly Deeks I n true West Coast tradition, Reefton leading con- tract mining and earthmoving organisation Rosco Contractors can turn its hand to a wide range of work. “We have a reputation for taking on and complet- ing work in the most challenging conditions, what- ever the site terrain, weather, and level of technical difficulty,” says company engineer Dave Stone. Reefton born and bred, Ross Moore (Rosco) started his working life as a builder and a miner. After gaining experience and qualifications as an underground and opencast coal miner, he began trading on his own account as Rosco Contractors in 1995, offering his services to the mining, civil, and building construction industries on the West Coast and Canterbury. By 2002 with 10 people employed and a couple of million dollar earthwork jobs completed, the company was incorporated. Rosco Contractors has continued to grow steadily to where it is today, with more than 100 people employed and annual sales of $30 million. The company reflects the hands-on, can-do style of its owner, and now with the involvement of a younger generation of Moores, it is a firmly West Coast based family business. Operating mines for mine owners and provid- ing mining equipment is a core business for Rosco Contractors. “We operate mines in some of New Zealand’s most challenging topography and climatic condi- tions,” Dave says. “Whether it’s coal, gold, industrial minerals, or construction aggregates we have the resources – skilled people, a wide range of plant and equipment, and the support services to deliver any project.” As a significant mine owner and operator in its own right through sister companies Moore Mining and Boatmans Coal, Rosco Contractors has a good understanding of the issues faced by miners and projects developers in New Zealand. With its own resources and its independent associates, Rosco Contractors can provide design and build solutions for new quarries, small mine developments, industrial and farm projects. The rehabilitation of land and management of environmental impacts is integral to the success of any mining operation. Rosco Contractors has a strong background in rehabilitation earthworks and a proven track record. For the past three years, the firm has been un- dertaking major earthworks as part of the Oceana Gold Globe Hill mine site rehabilitation, and these works will continue for another two years. Rosco Contractors provides earthworks for civil projects and retains an active interest in working
