Kim Newth W alker Architecture’s exciting design for the redevelopment of Richmond Club is fast taking shape, with contractors targeting end of year completion for the $15 million project. Richmond Club’s original base was lost in the 2011 earthquakes and replaced with an interim building. This is now undergoing a complete refurbish- ment and with a huge extension being added to completely transform what the club can offer. The redevelopment includes a new restaurant and bar with attached billiards/pool area and a small casino room, along with a new kitchen, a social events hall equipped with a full audio-visual system, three squash courts with changing rooms, and a new library and office. Designed by Walker Architecture as a social hub for the Richmond area, the club’s dynamic new architecture evolved out of a long process of consultation with club members and its board. Featuring contemporary angular forms that refer- ence the Southern Alps and bronze clad sculptural roofing, the new building is set to become a real landmark for Richmond. “The gable shapes of the old building have been given a modern architectural twist,” observes Jason Walker. The design has been carefully considered to seamlessly connect the new extension and the main reception area with the revamped existing building. A key part of the design process was working to ensure all the competing needs of club mem- bers and the community could be satisfactorily met within the redevelopment while also carefully • New era for club - page 60 considering budgetary constraints. “Having first started the design process with Richmond Club in 2014, it is very exciting to see this building now two-thirds complete and con- struction progressing so well.” New projects started by Walker Architecture just before New Zealand went into lockdown are also proceeding well. These include a new 600sqm residential project in rural Tai Tapu. As well, Walker Architecture has continued to receive a strong level of enquiry since the end of lockdown. While the lockdown had put a brake on activity for a time, Jason suggests many people used that time to reflect on potential new projects and new directions. Walker Architecture has an approachable, crea- tive and experienced team, focussed on the needs of clients and committed to creating architecture that is “intelligent by design”. That means fit-for-purpose buildings that are both inspiring and practical. “From the first meeting onwards, communication with the client is central to our process of design development. “As we get to know the client, we can begin to present options for their consideration. Design choices evolve collaboratively from this informed process and way of working.” The award-winning practice provides a warm welcome and looks forward to designing many new inspiring buildings for both residential and com- mercial clients in 2020 and beyond. “As we get to know the client, we can begin to present options for their consideration. Design choices evolve collaboratively from this informed process and way of working.”
