Richard Loader I n the weeks and days following Covid-19’s lock- down and the disruption caused to many around the country it is heart warming when positive stories emerge about local businesses like Christ- church’s Holloway Builders. Founded by James Holloway in 2011 with wife Pip joining a few years later, Holloway Builders has built a solid reputation for quality craftsmanship and industry best customer service. An experienced craftsman builder, James found passion for the building industry when he became a building apprentice in 1994. Since starting his own company James’ passion has been about delivering a promise to build quality homes his clients can be proud of. Operating throughout Canterbury, Holloway Build- ers undertakes a diverse range of projects from architectural new builds, multi unit developments, renovations and restorations. Having been with Holloway Builders for nine months, sales executive Kerry Oberholzer says one of the company’s major strengths is employing its own team of skilled carpenters, project managers and quantity surveyors. “From my experience, that’s a very big thing in this industry. The team has extensive industry knowledge, taking great pride in delivering high quality craftsmanship.” While an in-house quantity surveyor means the pricing pencil is always sharp, clients also benefit from having their own project and construction managers appointed to their individual project. One of the things Kerry has admired most about Holloway Builders is that it has a strong family fo- cused spirit with both James and Pip very active in the business - a family spirit that filters throughout the team and to the clients. “James, Pip and all the team have an open door policy when it comes to working with our clients and responding to their questions throughout the journey of their project.” That journey typically starts when the client approaches Holloway Builders with a vision and idea of what they want to achieve in a new home or renovation. “We do have a number of plans that clients can base their homes on but most of our clients start with a concept sketch which we then take to one of the architects we work with including Gravity Architecture, or the client’s preferred architect.” Repeat business and referrals are a frequent source of work for Holloway Builders and Kerry offers the example of ‘first home buyer’ multi-units recently completed close to the city in Spreydon. “We were appointed by the developer to build the units after building similar units for the same developer in St Albans. Our brief was to clear the existing site, complete construction and undertake the hard and soft landscaping.” Taking six months to complete, each of the five 62qsm units is complemented with a mezzanine above the living area—perfect for an office or ever- needed storage space. Off-street carpaking, dark brick cladding and a clever use of cedar trim along with a dark five-rib colour steel roof complete the impressive picture. The same developer has now asked Holloway Builders to undertake another multi-unit project, keeping the team busy. Kerry says since Covid lockdown rules were relaxed the phone has been kept busy with clients wanting renovation work undertaken, taking advan- tage of cheap mortgage rates.
