Grace Builder’s director, Tony Posthuma, says the homes have been quick to sell and the new oc- cupants have been singing their praises. The decision to develop these homes in Avonhead was personal for Tony and his business partner/ brother Graham. Their sister was looking to downsize from the family home after the passing of her husband. “She wanted a new home and likes the area so we began looking for a property that suited her.” They all agreed upon a 3000sqm section that housed an old two-storey home on Hawthorndon Road. The old two-storey home was demolished and the land excavated to be split into five 500-550sqm sections. On the excavation Tony and Graham say they had to remove 1000 cubic metres of soil due to an old stream that lay beneath the ground. “We ended up having to dig that out because the ground had to be remediated. “We had to dig three metres deep, then back filled with compacted hard fill.” On top of that the existing home was old and contained asbestos which had to be dealt with and though that slowed the process down and came with additional costs, Tony knows it’s all part of the parcel.
