Russell Fredric T he addition of a showroom to Steve’s Join- ery’s factory and office is another boost to the company’s already high level of customer service, co-director Amanda Walak says. Established in 2011 and owned and run by Steve and Amanda Walak, business remains “super busy” off the back of strong commercial and residential growth in the Wakatipu Basin. While there is still some uncertainty about how the landscape will look in six to 12 months with Covid-19 in the background, the well-established reputation of Steve’s Joinery, combined with the standard of work its tradesmen produces, puts the business in a strong position, Amanda says. “We are supported really well by our main builder-partners, both commercial and residential. We’ve had years to establish those connections. We are very fortunate.” “There is still a lot of development going on in Queenstown, there are so many new subdivisions and heaps of commercial work. There is never a dull moment here.” The company has completed pre-fit outs for a substantial number of retail stores, including QT Hotel, part of the Rydges Queenstown hotel complex and Holiday Inn Express which is currently in progress. While Steve’s Joinery aims to win contracts for high-end commercial and residential work and has a great track record in this niche, Amanda emphasises that work of any value is important to the business. In order to keep on top of demand and to ensure the highest standards of workmanship are achieved, two years ago a $200,000 investment was made in precision equipment which greatly improved capacity. Along with increasing production, the machines saved a huge amount of time and were more accurate, which meant the quality of production improved even more. A key upgrade was a new CNC flat-bed router, a computer-controlled machine used for cutting vari- ous hard materials such as wood and composites, allowing more tooling options for a greater variety of machining patterns and profiles as well as drill- ing multiple holes in cabinetry at once. Steve’s Joinery is fortunate to have an extremely stable workforce which includes a great team of skilled tradesmen, a tremendous asset to the busi- ness, Amanda says. “It’s everything, you are nothing without your staff.” Steve’s Joinery uses an advanced digital software program for the design of kitchen and cabinetry concepts for clients. “Our management team are available to help with all joinery requirements and will ensure clients have the most current information, advice and products readily available. Having a showroom means examples of the com- pany’s work can be displayed, providing another means of helping clients with their design and material choices. Along with joinery work such as cabinetry, Steve’s Joinery can create the likes of dining tables, bedroom furniture, book shelves or almost anything to add elegance or character to a home or commer- cial situation, including from a bespoke design. “We can can offer sound advice, creativity and practicability to your ideas. “We have a large range of material samples, colours and hardware to view in our factory along with brochures on most products we use.” “We have great relationships with our local businesses such as engineers and upholsters, so if any joinery requires steel or fabricated we can liaise with their teams to make this simple.” Steve’s Joinery is a member of the New Zealand Master Joiners Association.
