Established in 1984 and now one of the largest building companies in Southland, Ajax Building Contractors’ clients include major national and multi-national dairy and meat processors, local bodies and numerous com- mercial clients. While commercial work forms a large por- tion of its workload, Ajax Building Contractors also undertakes residential work from simple jobbing to high-end million dollar-plus homes. The company was the lead building con- tractor working under project manager, Signal Management, for the Gore District Council civic administration building’s $6 million stage one rebuild. Originally built in the 1960s by the Gore Borough Council, the two storey building had very little upgraded over the years, apart from a new council chamber and foyer added in 1994. The rebuild addressed the need for earthquake strengthening and removal of asbestos, inefficient design, cramped working conditions and an inadequate reception area.
