90 | Westland High’s new digs CYB Construction Ltd is working in partnership with Gibb Construction to complete the rebuild and renovation of Westland High School. CYB Construction BUILDING I t has been a long haul for Westland High School over the past five years since a fire destroyed the school’s hall and adminis- tration area, but the wait is now almost over with a rebuild on track to restore these core facilities by January 2022. In addition, three existing blocks are also being progressively renovated and updated. This is already putting a smile on teachers’ fac- es at the school with a new staffroom in Block B now completed as part of the revamp. CYB Construction Ltd is working in partner- ship with Gibb Construction to complete the rebuild and renovation, with this being their third project in partnership with Grant Gibb and his team. Both companies are working jointly at Westland High School with Grant also serving as site manager, assisted by CYB fore- man Brian O’Neil. Also supporting this project is CYB Construction Contracts Manager Denise McPaike and QS Nicole Tai. Work started on site last September. The new hall building is now rapidly taking shape, with the roof going on in early June. Impres- sive in scale, the 1000m² building is 7.5m tall at its highest point. Those on site received training in working at height before the project started, as well as training on elevated platform operations. The build is being closely monitored by a Ministry of Education quality assurance team, a programmer and a health and safety consultant. “Everything has to be totally ship shape and everyone fully understands what’s required - it has been a good process,” says CYB Construc- tion Managing Director Chris Yeats. “This is a heavily engineered building with very solid framing. A mix of structural steel and heavy timber framing has been used to form the hall’s shell, and rooms at each end of the building are typical timber framing with trussed roof. It has a timber floor that’s quite unusual in this day and age; it has been put in to match the height of the adjacent building so everything links through at the same level.” CYB Construction has considerable exper- tise in pre-cast concrete fabrication and cast a panel for the hall’s entranceway on site. The hall building, designed by Hopkin- son Kelsall Team Architects Ltd, includes a music room and recording suite, plus offices and meeting rooms. The layout has many sound-rated walls and doors, with special acoustic requirements adding to the complex- ity of the build. “In order to reduce sound transmission, the walls of the music suite are not square; they’re set at different angles so there are some irreg- ularly shaped rooms with acoustic windows between them. There are a lot of acoustically rated walls and doors and also numerous fire cells with fire rated walls between.” Also included iare special sliding doors be- tween rooms that are fully white-boarded on one side and other one-off features. CYB Construction is experienced in school and civic building on the Coast, with previous projects including Greymouth High School’s reception area, the Karoro School Library and the Westland Recreation Centre. “That centre is the biggest building we have done on the Coast but this one wouldn’t be far behind in terms of complexity.” Chris says solid working relationships, built over time, have contributed to smooth pro- gress on site. “It is essential when completing a project of this scale. We’re grateful to have a good group of contractors helping with this project and especially Gibb Construction who have brought their expertise and are helping to set a very high standard of work as well as attention to detail.” Kim Newth 74 Falsgrave Street Christchurch 8011 | Phone – 03-381 0862 | Email – info@ nmetals.co.nz P.O Box 10179, Phillipstown, Christchurch | Fax 03-381 0863 We are pleased to have CYB Construction Ltd as one of our regular customers.
