REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Queenstown: Gibbston Valley Resort Behind the vast undertaking of the Gibbston Valley Resort development is the vision, passion and determination of Phil Griffith, whose family has been involved in Gibbston Valley Winery since the ‘90s, and Greg Hunt, who brings a wealth of experience in resort developments. The idea for the Gibbston Valley Resort was first conceived in the early 2000s when they were offered Gibbston Valley Station, a 1000acre piece of land surrounding the winery. Greg was appointed CEO of Gibbston Valley Station in 2005 and plans for the Resort were developed and consented, ready for development in 2007. “We wanted to position Gibbston Valley as a quality brand with the intent of that leading to the development of real estate sales and the larger visitor accommodation experience,” says Greg. “A year later, the world suffered the global financial crash, and plans for the Resort were put on hold.” Fast forward a couple of years and Greg was approached by a music promoter who was interested in putting on an outdoor concert on the land. “Phil and I talked about it and we could see good opportunities for brand building and wine sales. We hosted our first Gibbston Valley Winery concert in 2010 and Phil and I became partners in Greenstone Entertainment. “We now do these concerts in Gibbston, Taupo and Whitianga, providing brand exposure through the country — all again leading to Gibbston Valley as a great experience, great brand, and leading eventually to the resort.” With New Zealand’s economy in a healthy upward trajectory in the years following the GFC and tourism becoming an increasingly significant contributor to the country’s GDP, Greg and Phil decided accommodation at the winery was needed.
