Page 30 Terrace Edge House by Anna-Marie Chin Architects is a 1000sqm build comprising five bedrooms, large kitchen/dining area, media room and 10-car garaging. The design includes nine structural steel chimneys and six fireplaces. Paul says, like many high-end homes, the construction was almost commercial in nature with a lot of precast concrete panels, exposed portals and glass. Extreme levels of workmanship were required to sequence the many varying materials including 3mm negative detailing throughout the house. Many features were handmade on site including 16 feature internal doors, some of which were up to 180mm thick with 2mm clearance. A massive handmade rimu entry door took ten people to lift into place. Paul, a joiner by trade, says that this handcrafted quality is just one aspect of what sets RBJ builds apart. “It’s awesome to receive recognition for, and to be associated with, these kinds of projects. Building homes like this is a privilege and should be a very collaborative process between builder, client and architect with mutual respect. “One of the judges commented that they didn’t normally see workmanship of this quality any more. But to us it’s normal; it’s what we do everyday and we love the challenge.” Owned by builder brothers, twins Paul and Peter, RBJ Ltd has been building quality Queenstown homes for the past 35 years. “We’re quite different personalities but it works,” says Paul. “Our work always reflects our infinite pride and passion in building quality homes. We relish the opportunity to exceed our clients’ expectations and encourage them to set them high.” Queenstown is an undoubtedly majestic setting however, the relative isolation, climate and terrain does constitute some unique challenges, he says. But due to its longevity and experience building in the region, RBJ has the local knowledge and skills required to ensure the success of any project. For example while many builders have been hit hard by supply chain issues, RBJ’s experience means it has been proactive in giving merchants and subtrades a heads up - often well before shop drawings and construction issue drawings are even complete. Its ability to make bespoke items has also helped. The brothers’ personal approach means that Paul and Peter are on hand communicating with clients on and off site every step of the way. “We’ve both spent at least 35 years building and take a hands on approach so have a very good understanding of what life on site is like. This helps to make a more enjoyable work environment and assists RBJ in producing extremely high quality award winning homes.” “It’s awesome to receive recognition for, and to be associated with, these kinds of projects.”
