Marlborough: Talley’s Blenheim REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT You never know what opportunities lie around the corner and life has an interesting way of taking us in unexpected directions, as Armi Chia, a senior manager at Talley’s in Blenheim, well knows. While Armi puts his move from the factory floor as a mussel opener to site production manager for Talley’s Blenheim aquaculture division within a few short years down to luck and good timing, his success with productivity and staff safety projects tells us of a forward-thinker with an engineer’s aptitude for innovation. Armi was established as one of Malaysia’s top TV broadcast audio engineers when in 2013 his partner Jeslyn suggested they take a break and travel around New Zealand for a few months. Basing themselves in Hastings, the couple packed apples, nurturing a growing interest in New Zealand’s food processing sector. With their working holiday coming to a close, Armi and Jeslyn headed off on a South Island roadie, where they got a hot tip from a Motueka local that went something like, ‘Get a job with Talley’s mussels! It’s bloody good pay if you can open them fast!’ The very next day the couple found themselves at work on the factory floor opening mussels. Armi didn’t get the chance to ‘get fast’ as within three days his potential was recognised and he started training as a machine operator.
