66 | REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Ignite Wanaka Buisness Awards: R & R Plumbing and Gas Recognised for outstanding work Kelly Deeks R&R Plumbing and Gas offers a variety of experience in the different backgrounds of the team. Young company R&R Plumbing and Gas has been recognised for its outstanding work and its reputation as a finalist in three categories at the Ignite Wānaka Business Awards 2021. After just three years in business, R&R Plumbing and Gas has featured in the Outstanding in Infrastructure/Trades, Outstanding in Innovation, and People’s Choice categories, and owners Pat Ryan and Matt Rickard couldn’t be more proud. Since it started in 2019, R&R Plumbing and Gas has grown with the building boom and the shortage of certified plumbers, gas-fitters, and drain-layers to meet housing development demand. “We have capitalised on this by developing long-term relationships built on communication, great service, and exceptional quality of workmanship,” Pat says. “We have consistent recurring customers and building companies that want to work with us and we have been told this is due to our excellent customer service, quality of work, and ability to meet deadlines.” R&R Plumbing and Gas offers a variety of experience in the different backgrounds of the team, and as a team, is made stronger by bringing what they have together. Matt is a Master Plumber and Gasfitter, trained in Gisborne and stacking up a wealth of experience in maintenance and renovation projects, with a fine eye for detail. Pat, who trained in Southland, is a plumber, gas-fitter, and drain-layer with extensive experience in new builds. From Latvia, Maija Onzule is R&R Plumbing and Gas’s third year apprentice with a difference. Trained as a heavy tracks/digger driver, she brings a unique skill set that is helping the firm to grow its drain-laying division from in-house. Hailing from Botswana, Mackay Claufield is R&R Plumbing and Gas’s first year apprentice. Eager to learn and with the patience to learn the right way to do things the first time, Mackay brings a strong work ethic and also a degree in marketing to the team. Matt and Pat are instilling the same education, values, and leadership that was mentored to them, to their own apprentices. Function, style and affordability — you can have it all. Phil Templeton 027 471 2686 “It’s all about role modelling and supporting our apprentices through their learning journey, as it was for us when we first started in the trade,” Pat says. “We pride ourselves on developing the next generation of plumbers. For us to contribute and pass on our knowledge and wisdom to our apprentices, this is especially important for the sustainability of the trade. We believe more women need to get into trades and we support this movement.” Pat and Matt have adopted innovative technology to help enhance their business excellence. They are using job management software Fergus to create and track pending, scheduled, in progress, and completed jobs on the go, as well as schedule daily tasks for each staff member, saving time and increasing productivity. They have synced the Fergus app to the Plumbing World app so materials can be ordered at the click of a button. They have also integrated Xero to sync with both apps, allowing them to invoice and communicate effectively with clients. As an employer, R&R Plumbing and Gas promotes innovative ways of doing things and values the opportunity for its employees to try new approaches. “In the world of plumbing, gas-fitting, and drain-laying there is often a lot of troubleshooting required and there isn’t always just one way to solve a problem. ”We support and train our staff to speak out and explore new innovative methods and techniques, and to utilise different tools to complete tasks.” Always interested in trailing new products, R&R Plumbing and Gas is now working with recycled plastic PVC water tanks. “We recognise new technology is often more sustainable and evolving daily, and this can support us to work smarter not harder for the future.”
