The company undertook the earthworks and rehabilitation and company director Ross (Rosco) Moore says it was a privilege to be involved in a project that successfully reinstated the land at Waikaia Gold Limited’s alluvial goldmine operations on the loodplain of the Waikaia River near Freshford, Southland Approximately 300 ha of land was disturbed over the life of the mine, including the mine path proper, haul and access roads, soil, silt and gravel stockpiles, pipelines, and settling ponds. Rehabilitation saw the progressive return of mined areas to past-mining contours. Rosco says that rehabilitation of land andmanagement of environmental impacts is integral to the success of any mining operation. “We have a strong background in rehabilitation earthworks and a proven track record,” he says. Rosco knows the mining industry from the ground up and is proud to run Rosco Contractors from the front, pioneering new projects and leading technical jobs on the company’s existing projects. Reefton born and bred Rosco started his working life as a joiner. In 1978 he beganmining at Archer Brothers Mine and Boatman’s Underground Mine, in 1985 he worked at Echo open-cast mine and in 1999 Spring Creek Mine. In 1995, after gaining experience and quali ications as an underground and opencast coal miner, he began trading on his own account as Rosco Contractors, o ering his services to the mining, civil and building construction industries on the West Coast and Canterbury. By 2002 with 10 people employed and a couple of million dollar earthwork jobs completed the company was incorporated. Since then Rosco Contractors has grown steadily and today employs over 120 people making it a major employer on the West Coast. Rosco Contractors re lects Rosco’s hands-on, can-do attitude, which sees it work in the most challenging conditions, whatever the site terrain, weather and level of technical di iculty. In addition to mine rehabilitation, the company’s services include contract mining, civil engineering and providing a full service to quarry owners from development through to drill and blast, quarry operation and materials processing. It also carts coal, gravel, fertilizer and other bulk materials and works with major civil contractors on a variety of projects. At its Reefton base it also operates a consented land ill, which is able to accept a range of contaminated materials from projects as far a ield as Canterbury and Golden Bay.
