74 | DEVELOPMENT Thompson Property Group: Fitzgerald Construction to page 76 Newly created space in Nelson CBD Karen Phelps A challenge of the site was its geometry and orientation, with a narrow street frontage and deep footprint within the city block. Thompson Property Group is working on a large development in Nelson. Located at 93-97 Hardy Street, the project was instigated after a fire in one of the tenancies in January 2021. Director of Thompson Property Group, Gaire Thompson, says that this brought about the opportunity to investigate the possibility of adding five apartments onto the top of the existing three retail tenancies. Designed by Nelson-based architectural design practice WCA Studio the development retains the ground floor core structure as commercial space while adding an additional two floors of apartments. WCA Studio co-director, Will Conway, says a key challenge of the site was its geometry and orientation, with a narrow street frontage and deep footprint within the city block. “This was overcome by the use the use of two internal lightwells, allowing for bedrooms to be centrally positioned within the layout, each with their own private outdoor space.” The head contractor is Fitzgerald Construction. Company owner Stephen Fitzgerald had been involved in project from the outset, initially making the building watertight then advising the architects regarding costings during the design phase. Stephen says the biggest construction challenge has been rapidly escalating materials costs and supply issues. timmillerplumbing.co.nz 0800 PLUMBING merv@timmillerplumbing.co.nz 03 547 4532 Proud to partner with the team at Fitzgerald Construction on another great project Providing scaffolding and access solutions to building and construction companies, tradespeople and homeowners.
