Kiwis quickly fell in love with this giant taste of happiness, and the love affair has been ongoing. The Original Chocolate Chunk Cookie was the first cookie designed and marketed for individual sale in New Zealand, creating a new category of individually wrapped cookies that Cookie Time still leads to this day. Cookie Time has found its place as New Zealand’s top selling cookies brand, and most trusted cookies brand. Cookie Time Ltd (CTL) has amassed an iconic portfolio of treat, snack and functional foods, including Cookie Time cookies and Christmas Cookies; Bumper Bars; the patented OSM brand; and Em’s Power Bars and Cookies. Smart entrepreneurship, innovation and ingenuity are driving forces for CTL, delivering on the business vision — a taste for every occasion, a smile on every face. In New Zealand, CTL’s 53 franchised distributors handle all stock delivery, merchandising and marketing to supermarkets, dairies and service stations nationwide, and is ranked New Zealand’s number one FMCG distributor, taking out the top spot in the 2021 and 2022 Coalface Consulting combined channel stores rankings. CTL also gives back to the community, through the Cookie Time Charitable Trust, founded in 2003 to help New Zealand children discover their gifts. Remaining a family owed business, CTL is headquartered in Christchurch, where it also has its bakery and bakery shop. What commenced as a good idea selling delicious cookies into local dairies, now boasts exports to over 10 countries, and operates Cookie Time Cookie Bars in Queenstown, Dunedin and in Japan, as well as online stores munchtime.co.nz and cookiebar.jp. “Our people are the heart of our business, the powerhouse for growth and success,” says General Manager Lincoln Booth. “We’ve got an amazing bunch of Cookie Timers working towards a common goal and absolutely committed to making a difference. Our values – ‘Big Hearts, Open Minds, Positive Actions’, absolutely underpin our business and our culture runs very deep. “We’ve invested heavily in our culture, and in empowering our people to be the very best they can be. “CTL is driven by entrepreneurial spirit, powered by grit and determination and a willingness to give things a go. “We believe there’s always room for improvement, and we always look for opportunity in a crisis. If something doesn’t work out we’re very quick to pivot and move on. Courage is a big driver for our business and we work as one team in figuring out what we need to do — in the words of Sir Peter Blake, how do we make the boat go faster?” Lincoln acknowledges that CTL’s 40th is a major milestone and testament to the creation of a successful and iconic Kiwi company, that is still family owned. “We went big for the 40th occasion, releasing a giant version of our famous Original™ Chocolate Chunk Cookie. “With Cookie Time famed for its large cookies and generous chocolate chunks, our birthday mantra was go big or go home. “The special edition 120g cookie, 40% bigger than the Original, brought this to life.” Cookie Time Co-Founder and Managing Director Guy Pope-Mayell and Creative Lead Suzanne Pope-Mayell also went on a national roadtrip to visit CTL’s franchisees to commemorate the occasion and give them a sneak peak of the second big 40th product release. The second release saw Cookie Time break into a new treat category with two flavours of Cookie Time Cookie Sandwiches, which proved an immediate best-seller, setting a new record as most successful novelty/singles ice cream launch ever. CTL is in major growth mode, with new markets, new countries, new channels and ongoing product innovation. “We’re leveraging our great relationship with Costco throughout the globe, and welcoming opportunities to explore new product formats and occasions. “In New Zealand our franchised distribution network have been our shining stars through Covid.” “We’ve invested heavily in our culture, and in empowering our people to be the very best they can be.”

Of course, they don’t want to be buying what their parents did! It’s why we continually review and refresh what we offer.” T T to page 6 www.belgotex.co.nz Congratulations to Hubbers Flooring & Soft Furnishings. Belgotex is honoured to have supported the team in achieving this milestone. Hubbers Flooring & Furnishings is wellknown in the South Island market for providing quality products to make beautiful home interiors. Throughout its 50-year history since incorporation, Hubbers has adapted to stay on trend and today offers an extensive range of the latest products from many leading brands. Lloyd and Chris Hubber founded the family business and, since 2004, their daughter Karin has been at the helm as company director. Having grown up immersed in the world of floors and furnishings, Karin entered the business knowing it inside out. “I used to help out after school and I remember getting in the car with Dad, driving around Christchurch and measuring homes for carpets – all the kids would be in the back seat! He’d roll out carpet on the driveway and cut it up there. “I worked for Air New Zealand for 25 years before returning to the business. Mum’s health was not great so they needed me to come in. My father was still involved through to 2011. As the next generation, I naturally wanted to make some changes of my own. I started bringing in fabrics from Europe. We hadn’t had homewares before like French Country Collections. It was all about wanting to provide that full offering so we could be a one-stop shop for home interior products.” The Hubbers story ultimately traces its origins to her father’s legendary ‘gift of the gab’. He first began selling flooring at the iconic Invercargill department store H&J Smith in the early 1950s before launching a large carpet warehouse in Gore. In 1965, the family moved to Christchurch and started a furniture and carpets business on Oxford Terrace. Karin recalls that her father had a very good working relationship with David Lewis, founder of D A Lewis, at that time. The Hubbers name soon became established in the city, with a store on Colombo St followed by today’s flagship store at 295 Blenheim Rd. “There were eight in Dad’s family – he had six brothers – and they were all successful salespeople. Dad excelled at selling too. Mum drove the money side of the business and did most of the accounting work.” Karin says her parents built good relationships with both clients and staff, winning loyalty for Hubbers that has endured and continued under her leadership. Some Hubbers’ staff have been with the business for 30 years. Strong relationships with suppliers such as Feltex, Godfrey Hirst, James Dunlop and Windoware are also central to Hubbers’ success. Clients know they can rely on Hubbers’ excellent range of flooring, homewares, furniture and more to give them the look they require. “People coming to us today will often comment on how their parents shopped at Hubbers too. Of course, they don’t want to be buying what their parents did! It’s why we continually review and refresh what we offer.” Increasingly, their clients are not just on the hunt for one product but are wanting support on coordinating a whole range of products, from window coverings to wallpaper, cushions and flooring, as well as guidance on colours and textures. “They want us to put everything together for them and advise them on what products go well together. Our staff are experts in this. Whether it’s for one room or the whole home, we can service everything ourselves. We have a lot of catalogues and can bring in products if not in store. “We also have our own sewing room, which is pretty rare these days. We have nine staff in there [who make Hubbers’ curtains and roman blinds]. They are very experienced and very fussy so everything is finished to a high standard. It means we can offer that extra personal service to our clients.”

Hubbers also provide an in-home soft furnishings consultation service, with a three-person specialist team on the road five days a week. Karin says this has continued to grow in popularity since the advent of COVID-19. “I think we will only see more and more demand for this in future.” Another shift that Karin has seen in the market over the past few years is a small swing back towards quality wool carpets. There is also a marked preference for natural looks, colours and textures, with linen fabrics and timber laminate flooring also being popular choices. “Heating in new homes is now so much better than it used to be, so people may only opt for carpet in the bedrooms and living but the rest is in hard flooring.” Along with their extensive reach in the home interiors market, Hubbers undertakes bespoke commercial interior projects, with one recent example being the Mayfair Hotel in Victoria St. For your next interiors project, get along to Hubbers to find inspiration and guidance on transforming your space from ordinary to extraordinary.

| 7 T T Russell Fredric Innovation underpins strong growth Tuapeka currently employs a staff of about 450 in New Zealand and 90 in the Philippines. Dunedin promotional products company Tuapeka continues to experience exponential growth underpinned by innovation, strong market demand and the people it employs who are its greatest asset, chief executive Greg Jolly says. “People are the essence of Tuapeka’s hard-working culture, which empowers innovative thinking while rewarding success. We are constantly growing and there are always exciting opportunities for people to join and grow with our team.” The company reached a major milestone in the last financial year by achieving an annual turnover of $100 million. However, in a ‘but wait there’s more’ moment, its rolling turnover for the past 12 months has already increased again. “The secret to our success is having a suite of branding capabilities that can all be done in-house, and at a scale and pace that no-one else can match in Australasia,” Greg says. He believes the relentless growth is also being driven by a change in the industry where companies want to give their staff and clients promotional products that last in terms of both their quality and branding. Through TRENDS, the customer-facing brand the company is transitioning to, it offers more than 6600 individual stock lines supported by more than 15 branding processes, including digital printing and transfers, embroidery, laser engraving, pad print, debossing and embossing. Drinkware is one of the most popular product categories, and the introduction of apparel to the range is seen to be the last piece of the product puzzle in which a comprehensive range of low to high-value items are available seamlessly from one source. Nine years ago when the company was based in Lawrence, Central Otago, it had two product categories and 50% of its turnover was pens. “We are very innovative around our website, TRENDS.nz, our product offering to our customers, and the systems we run as well; there’s a lot of bespoke systems and a lot of investment in IT.” Tuapeka currently employs a staff of about 450 in New Zealand and 90 in the Philippines, and with the growth comes an almost insatiable demand for more people, both skilled and unskilled who it provides comprehensive training and wrap-around support for. This is contrasted with skilled occupations such as information technology, research and development, engineering, logistics and supply chain, administration, accounting, human resources and sales and marketing. Although the TRENDS brand has a strong presence in Australasia, its sales team is New Zealand based. In practice this means decisions are made quickly, that people have the right level of autonomy to do what needs to be done and to ensure communication flows well. “We don’t want to get too corporate. That flat leadership structure means that we operate as a small business in terms of our mentality so that no one feels awkward about speaking to any layer of management in the business,” says Greg. “Everybody is treated well; basically it comes down to respect so no one sees themselves more special than anyone else. I think that’s what helps the culture side of it. “People are key to our culture. They do what’s required to make it all happen. Without them, it doesn’t matter how smart our strategy is or what ideas we have. Our people make it happen and deliver it for us.” In addition to its turnover milestone, Tuapeka’s new 8000 square metre warehousing facility in Fairfield was opened recently and the company also celebrated its 35th anniversary with a function in the Dunedin Town Hall in March.

10 | Booth’s Logistics T T Richard Loader Booth’s goes nationwide with purchase REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT T T to page 12 0800 77 77 21 www.alltruckfix.co.nz Proudly supporting Booths Logistics • FLEET MANAGEMENT • MECHANICAL • SERVICE • ELECTRICAL • WELDING & FABRICATION • 24/7 BREAKDOWN SERVICE WE KEEP YOU MOVING. The purchase of South Island trucking business Summerland Express Freight by the North Island’s Booth’s Transport to form a national transport network is one of the latest developments in the growth of the privately owned Booth’s family business. Built on the back of opportunity and a can do/will do mantra shared throughout the organisation, the company’s story starts in the 1980s with the humble potato and a need. Graham Booth was a potato grower in Opiki, just out of Palmerston North, and needed to get his spuds to Auckland, so he bought a truck. One thing led to another and soon two trucks were needed. In the early ‘90s Graham enlisted his son Craig to take the wheel and before long there was a fleet of ten trucks driving between the Manawatu and Auckland with general cartage. By the mid 2000s the fleet had increased to thirty trucks and Craig brought his brother Trevor out of his corporate job and into the family business. Business continued to grow and evolve both organically and through acquisition of other regional trucking and warehouse businesses, carrying general freight including FMCG products, and construction materials. Seeing an opportunity to grow both geographically, and through an expanded range of services, a series of acquisitions commenced in 2019 with the purchase of Hastings based Tomoana Warehousing, Te Awamutu based Couplands Transport, Taupo based Great Lake Transport, and Whangarei based The Produce Connection. Over a 40-year period, what started as a single truck delivering the family spuds to market, Booth’s had grown to depots and warehouses in Whangarei, Auckland, Te Awamutu, Tauranga, Taupo, Rotorua, Gisborne, Hastings, Masterton and Wellington, with hometown Palmerston North remaining the head office. The opportunity to purchase the Summerland Express Freight business in the South Island was especially transformational for Booth’s. Company CEO, Dallas Vince, says the company’s North Island customers had been urging the business to do more for them on a national basis, and the purchase of Summerland’s provided a perfect opportunity to satisfy that strategic need. “We had wanted to become a nationwide carrier and looked at doing it ourselves and organically building it up, however the purchase of the Summerland business provided us with ten South Island depots from Nelson down to Invercargill, one hundred vehicles and a team of one hundred and fifty. “Nationwide we now have over eight hundred team members working across the business, along with four hundred trucks in the fleet, all operating as part of Booth’s Logistics.”

He says Booth’s inherited many positive practices that can be applied in the north, while some practices from the north can be brought down south, resulting in a ‘best of both worlds’ national transport network. “Largely, we could not have wished for a better fit between the two businesses in terms of making things happen. We wanted to acquire a company that had the same culture and values as we had and we definitely got that with Summerland, which always found a way to get things done. “We are now one family and South Island customers will continue to receive the same good service from the people who were in the Summerland business. We’re investing heavily in fleet and have an extensive replacement programme over the next two years that will see one hundred and twenty new trucks come into the South Island, which our customers will get the benefit of. With that fleet modernisation, our company image and brand will continue to grow. “One of the big things for the South Island customers is that pre-acquisition they might have had to use another carrier to get their product from say, Christchurch to Auckland. Now they can have a streamlined service with one carrier who can take their product throughout the country, and that applies to our North Island customers too.” A Palmy boy born and bred, Dallas watched the business develop as he was growing up and says you could tell Booth’s were building something pretty special. “They genuinely believe in their people and doing right by their customers. One of the key points of difference for Booth’s is that it is a family-owned business. We’re a very lean organisation and that enables us to be quick decision makers. We’re very close to our customers and our people. We have a unique culture that sets us apart. “Our attitude is everything. From the moment the phone is answered and the product is delivered customers will get one of our people who will make it all happen, and go that extra mile.” While Craig and Trevor Booth are no longer in the business on a day-to-day basis making operational decisions, they continue to set and guide the family standards and culture. “The recipe is pretty simple. Craig and Trevor know that if they attract good people around them, and empower the people they bring on board to help run the business by making good decisions, that is a strong recipe for success.”

| 13 Booth's Logistics, formerly known as Summerland Express Freight Ltd in the South Island, has experienced a transformative journey with the support of iCOS Group's Transport Management System, iCOS Live. This advanced platform has revolutionized their operations, enabling them to provide customers with online bookings, electronic exchanges of bookings and updates, and e cient tracking and tracing of consignments. Founded by Chris Grace and Kathy Ross, iCOS Group has been a trailblazer in the industry for over 30 years. The name iCOS originated from the acronym "Integrated Cargo Operating System," representing the comprehensive and integrated functionalities of their innovative solutions. Although the unfortunate passing of Chris in 2003 was a setback, Kathy's unwavering commitment and vision for the future has continued to drive the company forward. In 2009 they released phase 1 of iCOS Live - ‘Internet Cargo Operating System’ In the South Island, Summerland Express Freight Limited, now Booth's Logistics, rst adopted iCOS Group's original Transport Management system in 2004, laying the foundation for streamlined operations. However, it was in 2013 when Summerland Express Freight transitioned to iCOS Group's next-generation product, iCOS Live, that they experienced a signi cant leap forward in e ciency and customer service. Grant Lowe, the former General Manager of Booth's Logistics, shared his insights on the impact of iCOS Live on the Company: "When I joined Summerland Express Freight in 2016, we primarily used iCOS Live as an invoicing tool. However, as we fully embraced the system and, in particular, utilised the sign-on-glass app with our drivers, we witnessed signi cant e ciency gains internally, resulting in a notable improvement in our customers' experience. It gave us a strong platform for the growth we had." The iCOS Group takes immense pride in its partnership with Booth's Logistics, which has not only revolutionized the logistics operations of the company but has also facilitated the seamless integration of other entities within the iCOS Group's network. Over the years, Booth's Logistics, formerly Booth’s Transport, has not only been a long-time user of iCOS Live but has also successfully acquired other iCOS Group customers, such as Couplands Transport, Great Lake Transport, Tomoana Warehousing, Summerland Express Freight, and L.G. Anderson Transport. This seamless integration of entities into a national network highlights iCOS Group's commitment to creating a cohesive and e cient logistics ecosystem. Founder, Kathy Ross, re ects on the growth she has seen from customer’s like Booth’s Logistics: “It gives me great joy and pride to have seen so many of our customers thriving on our platform. We want to see that journey continue long into the future” The future looks bright, with iCOS soon launching the next generation of products, such as iCOS Global and iCOS Connect. With Grant Lowe now working closely with Kathy and the talented teams in the iCOS Group of companies on these advancements, the company is poised to take Transport Management to new heights. We will buddy them up the whole way through and ensure they have the mentoring they need and learn from the team that’s been there and done it. “Then there are other young people who come inside, and might not ever want to drive a truck, and we will develop and invest in them as future leaders.” Booth’s Logistics operates a cadet programme for both drivers and operational staff with the future in mind. Dallas says that while there are some older people who enter the cadetship, by and large it is mostly young school leavers unsure about what they want to do next. “We can put them into operational cadet roles where they might drive a forklift, work in operations for three months, then rotate through to an administration role to understand how we price and set freight rates. “They might work in accounts or our fleet team in compliance to understand how we keep trucks on the road and keep them legal. “They get to transit through the eight functions of our business and within two years they have a really good understanding of how the business operates. “They are well rounded and have gained an appreciation for life-long learning. During that process they get a really good understanding about what area they want to work in. There is also a future leaders programme that runs in parallel with the cadetship. “Company owners, Craig and Trevor Booth, pride themselves on being able to provide people with not only job opportunities, but career pathways. “They are seeing people who were driving a forklift two years ago, who are now running a branch or in charge of a key area of the business.” Acknowledging the challenges in finding staff in the current tight labour market, Dallas says Booth’s Logistics is heavily connected with the secondary schools’ Gateway Programme which enables senior students to undertake workplace learning while still at school. “We currently have five young people from Palmerston North that spend a day a week at our Palmerston North Head Office, however that number changes all the time as they transition into full time work with us. “They might be driving a forklift, or out with trucks doing deliveries, or in the office working. “We attend school Careers Expos, so that students know how much we have to offer in the freight industry. We plan to replicate the same kind of programmes in the South Island.” Testament to Booth’s Logistics’ commitment to training, it has just been announced that on behalf of the Booth’s Training team, Training Coordinator Lisa De-Silver has accepted the 2023 Hanga-Aro-Rau (Work Place Development Council) Outstanding Contribution to Training Award. Winton, in collaboration with PBA Architects and leading construction company Cook Brothers Construction, is redefining the concept of living with the development, says Winton development manager Richard Belcher. “ALTA Villas perfectly encapsulates the essence of Wānaka, drawing inspiration from the grandeur of the surrounding mountains and the historic stone structures of Otago. The townhouses exude solid style, constructed using high-grade, quality materials that epitomize luxury and durability,” he says. ALTA Villas offers a boutique range of three and four-bedroom townhouses designed for comfortable living. Richards says the townhouses are a low maintenance, lock up and leave option for people who like to make the most of their spare time. They are clad in a mix of aluminium, timber and brick with a high render finish. Outdoor living is fully catered for including external fireplaces set amongst specimen trees and Portuguese laurel hedging. Double glazed aluminium joinery, energy efficient hot water cylinders and centralised air conditioning (individually controlled units/wifi compatible for remote apple or android control) ensure a cosy home. The townhouses enjoy sweeping views of the mountain ranges, allowing people to embrace the beauty of Wānaka. Nearby are more than 750km of walking and hiking tracks, an 18-hole golf course set among views of the Southern Alps and a plethora of shopping and dining options at Wānaka township. ALTA Villas two storey townhouse areas range from 183sqm to 201sqm, with free hold lot areas ranging from 139sqm to 256sqm. Prospective buyers can choose from a mix of three to four-bedroom units with one to two living spaces. Each villa features 2.5 bathrooms and a double garage, ensuring ample space and convenience. Alta Villas are resource consent approved for either permanent living or visitor accommodation 365 days of the year. Auckland-based architectural firm PBA Architects is known for its expertise in large-scale apartments and comprehensive residential developments across New Zealand, making them an obvious choice to lend their design acumen to the project, says Richard. Winton’s vision for a luxury lifestyle is based on the principles of premium quality, meaningful connection, newfound freedom, and space and privacy, says Richard. The aim is to deliver thoughtfully master-planned neighbourhoods that prioritise sustainability, connectivity and vibrancy. Richard says that Winton’s developments are located in some of New Zealand’s most scenic and majestic destinations reflecting Winton’s passion for ensuring people can connect with nature and enjoy the outdoors. “We understand that people’s relationships, activities and interests exist beyond their residence therefore we aim to enable those connections, and our developments maintain a blurred line, with the wider world,” explains Richard. He says Winton has forged a reputation for its integrated and fully master-planned communities that deliver superior building standards. With a portfolio encompassing approximately 7,500 residential lots, dwellings, apartment units, and retirement village units, Winton aims to leave a lasting legacy for generations to come, says Richard. The complex includes ten retail tenancies, with half already sold or leased, including a boutique supermarket, audiologist and fashion retailer. Richard says food offerings will be part of the tenancy mix. The development also includes 25 apartments, all of which are sold.
