Employing over 800 team members across the South and North Islands, Booth’s Logistics offers a diverse range of career and development opportunities. “A big proportion of what we do is driving trucks, but we also have a large operations team that load and unload trucks and warehouses, as well as plan and administer all our freight movements,” says CEO Dallas Vince. “We invest heavily in the development of our people. We bring people through from school age, give them their forklift licence, invest and pay for their transport qualifications and licences, and bring them up through the ranks. “They might drive a van for us, get their Class 2 licence and move into a Class 4 and the big rigs. We will buddy them up the whole way through and ensure they have the mentoring they need and learn from the team that’s been there and done it. “Then there are other young people who come inside, and might not ever want to drive a truck, and we will develop and invest in them as future leaders.” Booth’s Logistics operates a cadet programme for both drivers and operational staff with the future in mind. Dallas says that while there are some older people who enter the cadetship, by and large it is mostly young school leavers unsure about what they want to do next. “We can put them into operational cadet roles where they might drive a forklift, work in operations for three months, then rotate through to an administration role to understand how we price and set freight rates. “They might work in accounts or our fleet team in compliance to understand how we keep trucks on the road and keep them legal. “They get to transit through the eight functions of our business and within two years they have a really good understanding of how the business operates. “They are well rounded and have gained an appreciation for life-long learning. During that process they get a really good understanding about what area they want to work in. There is also a future leaders programme that runs in parallel with the cadetship. “Company owners, Craig and Trevor Booth, pride themselves on being able to provide people with not only job opportunities, but career pathways. “They are seeing people who were driving a forklift two years ago, who are now running a branch or in charge of a key area of the business.” Acknowledging the challenges in finding staff in the current tight labour market, Dallas says Booth’s Logistics is heavily connected with the secondary schools’ Gateway Programme which enables senior students to undertake workplace learning while still at school. “We currently have five young people from Palmerston North that spend a day a week at our Palmerston North Head Office, however that number changes all the time as they transition into full time work with us. “They might be driving a forklift, or out with trucks doing deliveries, or in the office working. “We attend school Careers Expos, so that students know how much we have to offer in the freight industry. We plan to replicate the same kind of programmes in the South Island.” Testament to Booth’s Logistics’ commitment to training, it has just been announced that on behalf of the Booth’s Training team, Training Coordinator Lisa De-Silver has accepted the 2023 Hanga-Aro-Rau (Work Place Development Council) Outstanding Contribution to Training Award.
