The company is proudly locally owned and operated by Chris Manson, who brings many years of civil works expertise, and engineer Peter Ballantyne. Both previously owned their own successful companies before joining forces to start Specialised Services Group. Chris says Specialised Services Group provides its customers with a complete solution and is split into three main divisions. The company’s earthworks and civil department covers an array of related projects spanning farm development, mole ploughing cables and pipes into the ground, stock underpasses, subdivisions, and civil contracting, roading and maintenance. Specialised Services Group also operates a white gravel quarry that specialises in high quality white gravel particularly for dairy lanes. The company’s building and construction division builds new homes, pole sheds, renovation and alteration projects and farm buildings as well as offering civil construction, concrete work, and hard landscaping services. The Specialised Services Group plumbing and irrigation division covers drainage, supply and installation of fixed grid irrigation systems, heating such as fires, solar installation, hot water cylinders and plumbing for bathroom and kitchen renovation projects. Potable water infrastructure and utility service installs are a major part the company’s work. It’s a comprehensive offering and sees Specialised Services Group work on a wide variety of projects around Waitaki, Mackenzie, South Canterbury, North and Central Otago and further afield depending on the project. “We have a lot of pride in the work we do and it’s a very team oriented atmosphere,” says Chris. “It’s rewarding to be able to drive around and see the quality of work the team has achieved”. Specialised Services Group employs a team of around 15 staff and Chris says new members are constantly being added due to the continuous demand for the company’s services and its ability to complete projects that are deemed challenging. For example, the team worked on the North Otago Irrigation Company stage 2 project subcontracting to McConnell Dowell and completing various specialised parts of the contract including multiple river crossings, installing temporary dams to divert the river to allow for installation of the pipework. The team was also involved in another challenging irrigation project, which involved floating and submerging an irrigation suction line 150m out on Lake Tekapo. “We take real pride in doing complex projects and thinking outside the box,” says Chris. “We like to do the tricky stuff.” Clients include local councils, new home builds, farmers and utility companies to name but a few. Chris says working for such a broad range of clients the company prioritises investing in the best plant and equipment in order to deliver to customers’ expectations. It helps mitigate downtime and ensures jobs are completed on time and on budget. Recent investment has been made in a Caterpillar Next Generation 15 tonne excavator with the latest innovation and technology allowing for greater safety settings. It forms part of the company’s 1.7 – 25 tonne range of excavators. Chris says that Specialised Services Group is proud to create job opportunities for locals. It has just taken on a new building apprentice as part of the government’s Mayors Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ) community employment programme. The programme is led by rural and provincial Mayors and delivered by MTFJ teams in partnership with local Ministry of Social Development teams. The overall team includes three Licensed Building Practitioners and a Certifying Plumber. Chris says that Specialised Services Group is committed to helping people grow their skillsets as Specialised Services Group’s business also grows. The company is Sitewise Gold accredited meaning the company has demonstrated that it has high quality health and safety systems in place.
