With consistent year on year growth, Te Pari Products has evolved as one of Oamaru’s larger employers, offering interesting career opportunities both locally and abroad. The Blampied family bought the business twenty-six years ago when it was still quite a small engineering operation making sheep docking and calf rearing equipment. Over those twenty-six years the business operation has progressively grown, expanding into the manufacture of high-quality sheep and beef livestock handling equipment, with an international reputation. In 2015 Te Pari Products had grown to the extent that new purpose designed and built premises were required and the company moved its manufacturing operation into a 4,400m2 facility, equipped with state-of-theart machinery. On-Stgoing growth resulted in a recent extension to that facility. The company manufactures a range of livestock handling equipment, which is made up of two categories; cattle crushes and cattle yard systems, and sheep handling equipment including Racewell sheep handlers for weighing and draughting. “All the equipment is manufactured here in Oamaru, and about 60% of our product is exported,” says Jeremy Blampied, Te Pari’s Global Sales & Marketing Manager. “Our main markets are Australia and the United Kingdom, and we send some of our product to Europe and North America. “We have established a reputation for manufacturing cutting edge and innovative products. “Our focus is on helping farmers be more profitable and more efficient, which is the challenge everywhere — get more with less labour and effort. “That’s the focus of all our products; to improve the on-farm profitability, and ensure the safety and welfare of farming people and animals. Our mission is to help farmers to embrace new technology and methodology to increase their efficiency.” The use of Australian steel along with European componentry results in a premium quality product which complemented with innovative designs is a key feature of the products. “We have an extensive range of registered patents, some of which are worldwide covering a wide range of countries. We have an on-going and quite agile in-house R&D programme and our product design comes from a mix of strategic direction along with customer feedback That’s the advantage of dealing directly with our customers.” Including twelve staff in Australia and three in the United Kingdom, Te Pari Products has a total team of 130. All off-shore staff are involved in sales and distribution roles “The New Zealand team have a broad cross section of skills from R&D, to engineering to sales, logistics and distribution and management. “There are a number of semi-skilled manufacturing roles, and there are machine operators, welders, robot programmers, and tube laser cutting operators. “We offer apprenticeships and have about six apprentices this year. Staff can progress from production, move into technical support and one of our team is now an operations manager in one of the off-shore branches.” Operating within a clean and safe manufacturing environment, Te Pari Products has continually invested heavily in cutting edge technology. In the next two months the company will take possession of a new $1.5 million tube laser which will significantly assist with production efficiency. As the business is continually growing, there are always opportunities for people to join the team, and the company works with the region’s high school careers advisers. A Careers Expo Day last year was well attended, with the state-of-the-art machinery sparking an interest with many. Continuing to be family owned and operated, there are now some third-generation family members in the business bringing with them new ideas, fresh energy, and assuring the future of the business. “Our focus is on helping farmers be more profitable and more efficient, which is the challenge everywhere...”
