What started out as a small Timaru-based company established to meet a gap in the market in the late 1990s has grown into a multi-faceted plumbing firm employing nearly 50 staff and offering a comprehensive range of services. Breen Plumbing was established in the early 1990s by Keri and Shaun Breen – Shaun being a qualified plumber and drain-layer – who saw an opportunity to set up their own company working on the big dairy processing factory in Clandeboye, just north of Timaru. Fonterra’s Clandeboye factory remains one of Breen Plumbing’s key clients, delivering plumbing, drainage, gas-fitting and site maintenance services to the world’s biggest dairy exporter, but its client base has expanded exponentially throughout South Canterbury. For five years after the 2010-2011 Canterbury earthquakes, the company had a busy Christchurch branch, but once the bulk of the re-building work was over it consolidated back into South and Mid-Canterbury. Shaun Breen remains active in the company in the role of Managing Director, but the day-to-day overseeing is in the hands of John Cannell who has a background in finance and systems. John joined Breen Plumbing ten years ago when it had fewer than 30 staff and was suffering growing pains. He and his team have focused on expanding the company to meet growing demand in a buoyant South Canterbury economy. Today the company is in a consolidation phase, working from its Brown St, Timaru, headquarters, and John says he’s happy with the present size of the operation and its diversification. “We cover a wide range of services: as well as the plumbing and drainage teams we’ve got roofing, gas-fitting and back-flow maintenance teams, and we also install wood and pallet fires,” he says. Breen Plumbing does maintenance and project work for the Alliance meat-works at Smithfield, and reaches out into a range of commercial enterprises, including the Port of Timaru, and the fishing and construction industries. A key part of the business is residential maintenance for a wide variety of property-owners. Despite the steady demand from the big local corporates, Breen Plumbing has an ongoing reliance on the residential market, and new builds in particular. “The residential market is an important part of our business and we have close relations with several local builders whose demands also spill over into the commercial sector,” John says. The company’s housing involvement includes a close association with nationwide residential specialist Stonewood Homes, as well local home-builders.
