The project marks a new phase for the company and Paul Smith Earthmoving general manager Stephen Todd says it is hoping to undertake similar projects in a head contractor role. Paul Smith Earthmoving completed the groundworks and civil infrastructure for the project then subcontracted the build to Timaru Construction. Stephen says it was important to ‘keep it local’ when selecting subcontractors. The project had complex challenges including moving and re-positioning a transformer. “It shows we have the expertise and project management skills to successfully deliver challenging projects. At Paul Smith Earthmoving we have a lot of talent within the business and excellent relationships with a number of subcontractors from varying disciplines both locally and nationally.” He says Paul Smith Earthmoving continues a steady growth trajectory taking on more clients and also increasingly larger projects. “Most clients are repeat clients, which is very positive, and we are also taking on new clients on the back of successful projects. We are continuously building our trusted reputation.” Established in Timaru over 35 years ago, the company has expanded into other South Island regions, and diversified its operations to successfully complete large-scale earthmoving and civil construction projects. It has branches in Timaru, Christchurch, Greymouth, and Cromwell, with satellite offices in Ashburton and Twizel, enabling projects to be undertaken in South and Mid Canterbury, Canterbury, West Coast, Central Otago and the Mackenzie region. The company’s client mix includes commercial and residential clients along with central government agencies and territorial authorities. Directors, Tony Moir and Bruce Tinnelly are both involved in the business on a day-to-day basis resulting in a personal service for clients. With over 180 permanent staff, complemented with up to 50 temporary staff at any given time, Paul Smith Earthmoving has the flexibility to adjust resource to not only meet programmed requirements but also adapt should the project scope change, says Stephen. The company has a broad range of skills including labourers, machine operators, supervisors, project managers, engineers, drainlayers, truck drivers, mechanics and other workshop personnel supported by a range of managers and administration staff. Stephen says early contractor involvement is the company’s preferred methodology as it offers the most value to clients, helping to solve any potential issues and often coming up with more efficient and cost-effective ways of doing things. Environmental consideration is another important aspect of the company’s operations on every job and Paul Smith Earthmoving has ISO 14001 accreditation. Recently purchased plant includes a shredding machine to shred tyres to cover landfill sites instead of using gravel or clays. “We are also currently investigating the possibility of using the shredded tyres as a drainage material. This is being done in the United States and we are testing this at the moment for the New Zealand market,” explains Stephen. While recycling and re-using materials on site is the first priority in cases when this isn’t possible the shredder is also used to reduce the volume of material going to landfill, typically by 60% for demolition waste. He says Paul Smith Earthmoving remains busy across the South Island. Current projects include the Dolomite Point Redevelopment for the Department of Conservation. Paul Smith Earthmoving is working with Naylor Love to complete the civil construction works for the experience centre including car parking, creating roads etc. Native plants have been removed from site and replanted elsewhere. It is also just finishing work on a maintenance facility project at Lyttelton Port in Christchurch for Hawkins and has just commenced work for an upgrade project at Westland Dairy, which will see Paul Smith Earthmoving undertake the groundworks and civil infrastructure works for Westland Dairies Project Gold Dust.
