Geocoat Exterior Plasterers, based in Rolleston, is a licensed Rockcote cladding system applicator working throughout theSelwyn area and wider Canterbury. They oversee the whole job, from installing the cladding to the plastering and finishing, and are licensed building practitioners with a five-year workmanship guarantee. “We’re a one-stop shop of the who exterior work,” owner and operator Lewis Lester said. Rockcote, owned by Resene Construction Systems, is polystyrene or light weight concrete cladding. Achieving the license meant that Geocoat could guarantee its quality as the product has a 15-year guarantee. “They’re pretty selective on who gets them. There’s a 15-year guarantee on their product so they’ve got to make sure the people are getting it right,” Lewis said. “For them, it’s more like a quality control. People that are buying and using (their system) have been scrutinised (through the license) … and they know that the job has been done properly. “People know if we are licensed with them, they know it’s going to be done right.” As part of licensing, Rockcote carry out a site inspection to ensure workmanship and quality is up to standard. “It’s another set of eyes on it … (and) peace of mind that the quality is there.” Other systems did not have the same checks in place, he said. Quality was important as the exterior of a home was the first thing people saw when they arrived, Lewis said. Geocoat was recognised by the industry last year when it won the Resene Contruction Systems national award for house of the year exterior for a property built in Fendalton, Christchurch. It used Integra cladding with a Cerano concrete finish. It also won South Island house of the year interior for a home at Scarborough, which had traditional Moroccan Marrakesh cladding and Tadelakt. This job allowed the team to get creative. “We worked with the client and the architect and off that briefing we came up with that,” Lewis said. On top of this, a Geocoat apprentice that joined the team after leaving school won apprentice of the year last year through the BCITO Awards. Lewis himself has 20 years’ experience on the tools and 10 years in business. He started as a one-man band doing some contracting and slowly built a business from there. He now has 10 staff and six contractors that work with him. His wife takes care of the administration side of the business. And there’s no shortage of work, especially in the ever-expanding Selwyn District. “If you drive around Rolleston you’ll see our signs on every corner.” He and his family had moved out to Rolleston to be nearer the market. “We knew that’s where the work was going to be.” The majority of work is in residential, although he has picked up work on a retirement village in Amberley. “We do a lot of everything really but mainly we try to stick with residential.” He said growing the business relied on producing quality work and communicating well with stakeholders. Lewis has had a relationship with Rockcote spanning 20 years having started out in the industry working for them. At the time there was a large amount of work fixing up leaky homes across the country. He had never used another system and remained loyal to the product, and in return Rockcote has provided him with plenty of support, he said. “They give us a pretty good service.” While building across the country was slowing down, the industry was steady in the Selwyn area, he said. Geocoat had increased its sales by 15 per cent year on year.
