BUILDING An uncompromising passion for perfection is driving a cycle of success for Wanaka business Top Coat Decorators (TCD). Owner Brendan Benjamin has 27 years experience in the painting a decorating trade and is unequivocal about the reputation of his business being founded on quality, service, punctuality andmeticulous attention to detail. “Our motto is quality by distinction.” For Brendan, this means that people should be able to distinguish that the contractor was TCD by the visible quality of the work. The business has been operating inWanaka and the surrounding areas since 2017, o ering painting, wallpapering, protective coatings, cedar protection and property maintenance. Before starting TCD, Brendan initially worked inWanaka working for another company and was subsequently asked by a irmwho was building a retirement village if he would take over the two year long painting and decorating contract for the project when the quality of his work was noticed. This resulted in TCD to not only being established, but growing to employ 10 sta today and gaining contracts for high-end architecturally designed homes, work it has done for ive years and continues to be in strong demand for. “We are methodical, we do everything according to Master Painters standards and to the product manufacturers speci ications. If we tried any shortcuts it would come back to bite us so we do not cut corners. “It’s all about quality; we don’t over promise Passion for perfection and under deliver. It has to be 10 out of 10.” It is not just TCD that needs tomaintain a high standard; when it comes to work such as interior painting, the onus is also on the quality of the Gib stopper’s work, Brendan says. Wallpaper has made a comeback in interior design in recent years, especially in high end homes, and wallpapering is undertaken by a dedicated tradesman with specialist skills in both placing the of it as well as understanding the nature and technicalities of the various wallpapers and vinyls speci ied. Numerous houses built in Central Otago over the past one to two decades have cedar cladding and decorative elements, but people need to be aware that it requires annual maintenance which involves oiling with specialised products, Brendan says. These products penetrate deep into the timber to prevent the absorption of water while also protecting from the harsh Central Otago sun to help reduce warping, cupping and splitting. Brendan says cedar needs to be washed every year and oiled with a rejuvenating coat every three to ive years which is something some homeowners are not fully aware of. This process involves two coats over three months to allow time for the irst coat to dry. The high standards of workmanship and depth of product knowledge that are intrinsic to TCD’s culture and operation have not only underpinned its consistent workload but has also ensured a considerable amount of forward work. “We have four years of pre-booked work ahead of us, so we are doing pretty well.” House for sale inWanaka? We are north facing so we’ve got a lot of glass.” Designed by Glenn Allan of IDSGN architecture, the four bedroom open plan home has a footprint of 260 square metres and is supported by a thermally broken MAXRaft floor and thermally broken glazing with low E (low emissivity glass) to minimize heat loss. Textures and tones of concrete and timber feature on both the exterior and interior to create a Scandinavian look. The exterior is sheathed with RAB board, an airtight and watertight fibre cement product that provides bracing and a substrate for the Milano STO plaster finish which, together, resembles concrete precast panels. This is complemented with light toned vertical Truwood thermally modified pine while the interior repeats the exterior design and features concrete fluted block, timber floors and timber on the walls. “I’ve built a few for myself in the past; this is my first one down here in Central Otago and it was good to get back on the tools. That’s what really gave me the passion to get back into it myself because of my love for it.”
