Comprising three pavilions, the form of the 380 square metre home has great presence, franchisee Andrew Wheeler says. The client, a medical professional who emigrated from the United Kingdom, plans to live in the house long-term and focused on achieving what he wanted rather than tempering his ideas and preferences with a future sale in mind. “The materials are elegantly balanced, and inside personalised elements created a house that already has a sense of history in its makeup. It has an earthy, natural vibe.” For the overall plan, the client drew some of his inspiration from David Reid’s Queenstown show home with its central pavilion and two perpendicular wings, while Queenstown influenced architecture was something he also really loved. The result is a striking three bedroom home that includes an English pub-style bar that is encapsulated in warm American oak panelling on its walls, ceiling and cabinetry. It even includes a pet lounge so the owner’s cats and dogs can also lap up some luxury, or alternatively find a sunny spot away from each other. One wing contains the master bedroom, bar and a cosy lounge with a full height schist fireplace, while the opposite wing houses two guest bedrooms with the main dining room adjoining. The central pavilion features a high vaulted, oak lined ceiling and houses the kitchen and main lounge that, with its full height glazing on the north elevation, allows for a massive amount of light to stream in. By contrast, the main bathroom has no windows and resembles an opulent beige and brown-toned, marbled hotel bathroom. The marble effect was achieved by installing Laminam porcelain tiles, nicely complemented by a white porcelain toilet, white basins and a deep white bathtub. “The tiler did an amazing job on it.” There is a double garage at the rear and, reflecting the Central Otago influence, the exterior is clad in cedar and schist. Andrew is extremely pleased with the overall result as well as the considerable level of detail and craftmanship that has gone into the home. “It’s awesome. You don’t get the chance to build house like this that often. “It’s really cool the client was willing to push the limit a little more than some, because he did it for the love of the house and is putting down long term roots rather than having a developer’s mind set.”
