Alpine Group Construction BUILDING Blending with the region’s natural and rugged beauty, the recently completed Jack’s Point Pharmacy takes pride of place at the foot of The Remarkables mountain range, six kilometres south of Queenstown. Designed by Christchurch practice DD Architects, the building was crafted by Queenstown based Alpine Group Construction, and has been operating since Easter this year following a 10-month build. Perfectly located on a corner site on the main road leading into the highly rated Jack’s Point lifestyle estate, the adjacent road leads into the neighbouring residential development of Hanley’s Farm. Also built by Alpine Group Construction for the same client in 2022, a neighbouring two storey building is home to Queenstown Medical Centre and Remarkable Start, an early childhood education centre. Sam Shefford, who co-owns Alpine Group Construction with business partner Shane Johnstone, says with its natural colour pallet of dark browns and greys, the Pharmacy was designed to blend with the environment, as well as reflect the farming history of the area. “The western side of the pharmacy has two sets of decorative cedar barn doors that give the impression of a Central Otago barn. That also blends with the design of the neighbouring building.” The single storey pharmacy has a total footprint of 225sqm and consists of five large steel portals and internal walls. “The structure is self-supporting, which means that all internal walls could be removed and the structure would still stand, giving it the benefit of multi-use,” explains Sam. “The exterior is a mix of cedar at the two gable ends, schist panels on three sides, light coloured plaster, dark corrugated iron wall panels and roofing. Large box columns at the gable ends gives the structure profile.” Sam says that the ground conditions were the only challenge he and his team faced during the building’s construction. “There has been a lot of reclaimed land in that area, with a lot of topsoil moved around during different stages of the development over the years. While the site did have a geotechnical report, some of the foundation footings had to be deeper than anticipated to reach solid ground. But it was a very good project to work on.” Alpine Group Construction was founded by Sam and Shane in 2012. Based in the Queenstown area, the Wakatipu Basin is the sole source of work the building company, with Jacks Point the furthest reach. “Over the years we’ve developed a set list of clients that we work for and they do multiple builds throughout the region. We’re doing a good mix of commercial and residential projects, and have just completed a high-end residential home in Lake Hayes. We’re now doing a refit of a bar/restaurant on the Steamer Wharf in Queenstown.” Southlanders by birth, Sam and Shane have an open approach to customer relationships. “Our job is to save the client money, while delivering a high-quality product. If we can do that then we’re succeeding in our job. We have a great team of experienced carpenters and apprentices and everyone gets on very well. We typically run multiple sites and both Shane and I are always on site somewhere, complementing a great team of guys. Apart from a home office, we don’t have an office, and at any one time a client or a designer can see us on site.” For all Boom and Line pumping needs • Concrete supply • Concrete placing Find us on Facebook!
