104 | BUILDING Delivering on a promise Integ Builders’ Pete Langford has been building custom homes, renovating old homes, and carrying out heritage restorations for more than 10 years.. Integ Builders T T Kelly Deeks Combining the best of old school practice with the latest advances in process and materials, Pete Langford of Integ Builders brings craft, passion, and commitment to new build and renovation projects that require that special eye for detail. Integ Builders has recently established in Waimate, with Pete and his partner Niwa heading south from Nelson to chase their self-sufficient lifestyle dream. Settling on just over 17 acres, they have relocated a 110-yearold transitional villa from the site of Lister Home and spent the last wee while getting set up for off-grid living. Now moved in, Pete is ready to take his diverse skill set and can-do attitude out to other clients in South Canterbury and the Waitaki District. Pete, a third generation builder, can and does turn his hand to just about anything. “People tell me I’m a detail freak,” he says. “The success of a build can hinge on one detail and if you get that wrong, you can’t deliver what you’ve promised and that’s my job - delivering what I’ve promised.” Pete has been building custom homes, renovating old homes, and carrying out heritage restorations for more than 10 years. He loves taking on the detail-oriented projects which require him to think outside the square. One of his favourite recent projects was completed for Heritage Homes, a design and build company creating modern homes to the latest specifications while retaining classic and timeless design features. Pete ran a job in Whangarei for a client who wanted an early 1900s villa style home. Heritage Homes’ Avondale plan featured colonial skirtings and architraves on the interior, and elegant lattice and bracket detailing on the front verandah. When the roofing company came to do their part, one of the guys asked Pete whether this home had come from Auckland on a barge. “At first I was a bit insulted, but then I realised he thought it was an original villa!” A later build of very contemporary pavilion style home was also highly detail-oriented. “The detail called for the cladding to come down over the soffit and have a 20ml lip at either end of the building, which were at different heights,” Pete says. “These are the types of details you’ve got to watch out for, and I had to sit down and figure out how to achieve it. It’s not just about sticking bits of timber together.” Pete’s superlative attention to detail is a great source of pride, and he exercises this not only on the building site but also in his high level of open and transparent communication with clients. “I want to know exactly what their expectations are, and I want them to know exactly what we are going to do, when it’s going to happen, and what it’s going to cost. There are no surprises with me.” Meanwhile Pete is loving the lifestyle Waimate has to offer, and says it is definitely a town that’s going places. From the annual Strawberry Fare to the Waimate Rodeo to the upcoming Pest Quest, there is always something on for everyone to enjoy. Pete is a keen hunter and will be joining the Pest Quest in the hopes of bringing down an enormous kangaroo sized wallaby. “He’s the stuff of legend. People have been after him for years.”
