Fisher Built BUILDING Fisher Built’s latest project is one that is close to home for owner/operator Scott Fisher. The project, nestled in the heart of Arrowtown, was previously Scott’s grandparents’ home, which they purchased in 1992 as their retirement haven. However, the home has since been demolished, but with a desire to keep the site in the family, Scott’s parents have retired to Arrowtown from Invercargill, where they are rebuilding to ensure the site lives on for another generation. Scott and his team have been tasked with making that dream a reality, blending tradition with modern living to reflect both the community’s heritage and contemporary architectural excellence. And, that task is one that has captured the attention of the tight-knit community, Scott said. The 267m2 three bedroom house, situated on the corner of Kent St and Adamson Dr, has been designed by MAS Architecture in Invercargill, who are known for their bespoke residential homes. Their brief was a low maintenance house where the owners could enjoy retirement. The result is a home that balances aesthetics and functionality, with insulated concrete panels featuring an off-board finish from Balcrom in Cromwell. “These make up most of the living wing internally and externally.” The remainder of the cladding is Flashclad and Abodo weatherboards, adding to the home’s durability and visual appeal. One of the standout features and more challenging aspects is a 9.5 metre steel beam above sliding doors of the same length, supplied by Nu Look Invercargill. The house sits on a 650m2 site, which adds an extra 130m2 compared to the original family home. “It demonstrates that with good design you can increase the size of your home on a modest section.” Like most builds, it has come with its challenges, including meeting the requirements of the Queenstown Lakes District Council, particularly for road closures during the delivery of concrete panels, which required careful planning. Despite those hurdles, Scott has enjoyed watching the project progress and working through the various stages of the job. “I love the process of beginning to end builds with interesting materials.” He also enjoys the challenge of keeping a job on track and the evolving timeline with sub-contractors. “There’s always a massive sense of accomplishment when a project of any size is completed.” And, with his current Arrowtown build, he’s looking forward to getting to see more of the house than he normally would. The construction team consists of Scott as the project lead and manager, along with two additional builders. However, Scott is searching for a new apprentice, someone willing to be trained to the standards required of the Fisher Built team. The team fosters a family-friendly atmosphere, often bringing their children and dogs to the site for end-of-day gatherings. With 10 years of construction experience, including building his own house, Scott is passionate about maintaining a boutique, family-run business. Future projects include another high-end architectural home in Caernarvon St, Arrowtown, which is a precast panel house supplied by Balcrom, along with a passive home, and a bathroom renovation. Scott said now was a fantastic time to build, and he aims to communicate transparently with clients about costs and timelines to ensure realistic expectations.
