Te Awa Lifecare: The Grange Village COMMUNITY Situated in Mosgiel, an urban satellite of Dunedin, The Grange Lifecare, at 19 Clachan Grange Road, offers residents a wonderful choice of homes – villas and cottages as well as care beds for those requiring special care, in a safe, warm and inviting environment. Privately owned by Terry and Mandy Pratley, Geoff and Leanne McPhail and their families, The Grange Lifecare Village’s design, facilities and wider environment are driven by the vision to offer residents, regardless of their situation, lifecare in a wonderful rural setting. “The Grange is our second Lifecare Village, with Te Awa Lifecare located in Cambridge. Each village offers a very special, unique experience for residents,” Mandy says. The Grange, is growing organically, beginning with the care centre. Building is happening ongoing, with work first starting nine years ago. ome villas have been built and occupied nearly 3 years but Mandy stresses that the development approach is to develop homes over a period of several years. “We have our community centre and our care facility developed and villas, cottages and care will continue to be built in ensuing years. In total, when completed The Grange will have 80 care beds, 80 cottages and 140 villas.” A point of difference considering how The Grange Lifecare Village has evolved is that the emphasis is on provision of care and community facilities at the inception of the build. “We felt morally because we’re committed to care we couldn’t establish a village for people over 70 without prioritising care support and a community. We’re there to make our residents lives the most comfortable they can be.” Mandy is philosophical about the journey ahead too, saying that maybe in 10 year’s time the whole village will be completed. Given that, she would like to acknowledge the tremendous support they have received from the local community and local companies. Located near the Taieri Plains The Grange Lifecare Village has expansive open areas, giving residents a sense of space. The land was originally one of the earliest farms in Mosgiel, with the first occupant of “We felt morally because we’re committed to care we couldn’t establish a village for people over 70 without prioritising care support and a community.” the land, Archibald Anderson, settling on it in 1844. The land was regarded as very fertile and after many generations and incarnations as a working farm, it more recently grew peony roses. “We’ve made sure in the design of the buildings that there’s a nod back and reference to this proud rural heritage. This certainly isn’t anything like how other developers build retirement or care villages, with more of a cookie cutter approach. That’s not us!” Villas are designed with each individual resident and are all unique in that way. Community facilities include a cafe, indoor bowls, a gym, snooker room, a well-resourced library, cinema, arts and craft space and a hair salon. Mandy says that having been in the sector a long time now, they are happy to concentrate on the two villages they own, each one with its unique special character. “We are encouraging people to come and see us and have a walk around to experience this special space we and our local community regard very highly. “If people out there are wondering what life could be in a retirement and care village they really need to come and see us, because we’re different. “Any visitor would be made to feel most welcome.”
