74 | CONTRACTING Hi Flo Plumbing (1992) Ltd T T Russell Fredric Business ‘flat out’ for diverse Oamaru business “Being a diverse business and offering many channels within the Hi Flo group, we are not as impacted the same as others.” Excavation Canterbury Contracting Demand drives growth T T Karen Phelps A passion for excavation led Duncan Breading to start Excavation Canterbury Contracting in 2022. The business has since progressed strongly offering a high quality cost effective service to a variety of clients including construction companies and private clients for residential, lifestyle blocks and farms. Excavation Canterbury Contracting completes a full range of residential and commercial services and adjusts the business model to cater to the market needs at the time. Locally owned and operated customers deal with Duncan direct, meaning a more personal approach. He can sort out issues promptly and also trouble shoot as required, coming up with innovative, cost effective solutions. Duncan says that because Excavation Canterbury Contracting has its own plant this allows it to be flexible and be responsive to client needs. It also means reliability and a quality result as equipment is well serviced at all times. Excavation Canterbury Contracting works Canterbury-wide and can tackle a variety of projects such as driveways, house pads and foundations. “We provide reliable excavation and backfill construction to give a reliable and robust result so the next stage of the home or building construction can progress with confidence.” With Christchurch growing, subdivisions continue to gain momentum on the outskirts and Excavation Canterbury Contracting can provide comprehensive services including site scrape and preparation, foundations, roading, car parks, footpaths and driveways in a seamless one-stop-shop offering. Rural work also figures highly including tracks, races and preparation for farm buildings and pole sheds including drilling auger holes. Duncan says he aims to make things easy for busy farmers, offering one point of contact and a service that works to farmers’ timelines and deadlines. Other types of projects include excavation services for service trenching, bulk earthworks, landscaping and gravel supplies. Excavation Canterbury Contracting can even pull out a tree then split the wood ready for firewood, says Duncan. It’s just another example of the way that Excavation Canterbury Contracting delivers above and beyond expectations to add value where possible. Duncan says that Excavation Canterbury Contracting has established strong ties to local supporting businesses such as Hurley Aggregate situated on the corner of Tallots Road and Tram Road in North Canterbury, which supplies high quality aggregate for Excavation Canterbury Contracting’s projects. At the business end, Kendons Chartered Accountants provides sound taxation support. Business is booming for Oamaru firm Hi Flo Plumbing and it is not just a shortterm blip. Owned by husband and wife team Peter and Helen Ryder, Hi Flo Plumbing was established by Peter’s parents Ian and the late Helen 52 years ago. With this more than five decades legacy behind it, the company has created a reputation that has underpinned its consistent work flow across the various parts of the multi-faceted business as well as attracting many outstanding projects. With a branch and staff in Twizel, Hi Flo Plumbing has a strong presence in the wider region from Oamaru, through the Hakataramea Valley, and the Mackenzie Country. It offers plumbing, drainage, gas, heating, solar and spas as well as holding Rockgas agencies, and is North Otago’s home of Weber barbeques, indoor and outdoor wood burners, pellet fires and an array of other related products. Having a staff of around 32, the scale of Hi Flo is easily befitting of a large city business. “Being a diverse business and offering many channels within the Hi Flo Group, we are not as impacted the same as others. We’ve found we haven’t experienced the downturn here in Oamaru. What we tend to find is people spend money in different areas through recession and, honestly we’ve been just as busy as ever.” By far the most technical project undertaken in the company’s history, Hi Flo Group scoped, designed and installed heating, plumbing, and drainage systems throughout a $20 million luxury lodge project in the Ahuriri Valley, South Canterbury. This included an entire underground geo-thermal pipe system to power radiators, underfloor heating and heat pumps throughout. The location in beautiful rugged ranges 900 metres above sea level meant Hi Flo had to deal with problematic climate extremes. The architecture of the lodge is designed to mimic the rolling high country hills and the undulating design of its curved roofs and the need for longer flue runs required Hi-Flo to work closely with appliance manufacturers to meet unique specifications. The shape of the building required many hours of pre-work shop drawings and project management to ensure agreement on best methods and standards. With so much riding on this and other highly technical projects, Peter attributes Hi Flo’s ability to be trusted with them to the company’s well-established reputation. “A lot of that is through being in business for 52 years and being well-known and the years of experience, and having a good team is definitely what we’ve got and we try and maintain that.” QUARRY SUPPLIES Dean Hurley 027 333 7140 dean@hagg.co.nz • CAP 65 • CAP 40 • CAP 20 • Pit Run • Large Soakpit Boulders • Crusher Dust • 12mm Chip • Screened Sand Horse Arena Sand • Screened Soil ZZZ DFFRXQWLQJ FR Q] 6KRZ 3ODFH &KULVWFKXUFK .HQGRQV %XVLQHVV $GYLVRUV &KDUWHUHG $FFRXQWDQWV /DXQFK RU H[SDQG \RXU EXVLQHVV ZLWK .HQGRQV &DOO XV PHQWLRQ %XVLQHVV 6RXWK DQG ILQG RXW KRZ +HLGL FDQ KHOS \RX DQG \RXU EXVLQHVV ZLWK D FRPSOLPHQWDU\ FRQVXOWDWLRQ For more than 20 years, Oamaru and Mackenzie Country locals have trusted Peter and Helen Ryder and the Rockgas team for their safe and reliable LPG services. -ǾǬȉɬ٪ɅǕƲ٪Ʋnj˚ƤǛƲǾƤɬؙ٪ƲƇȷƲ٪ƇǾƫ٪ quality of bottled gas in your home and business.
