Between them, husband-and-wife team Andrea and Andrew Elliott run two successful Dunedin-based companies – Click Property Management and RenoMasters. Their first business, Click Property Management, was started in 2010 and has grown organically to be Dunedin’s largest independent residential property management company. It was off the back of this, that Andrew launched a renovation and building company in 2018. Andrew had bought his first property at the age of 18, as he started a near three-decade career in sales and marketing, and their portfolio grew from there. “We purchased properties throughout our careers and they eventually needed repairs, renovations and improvements. I personally have done over 15 renovations with Andrea,” Andrew says. “The property management business was running smoothly, and being a creator, I saw the need for a separate maintenance arm to complement our business, so decided to set up RenoMasters, a man in a van. “But this very quickly grew and before I knew it, we had two staff, and two vans, and things continued to grow from there into renovations and new builds,” he explains. With six full-time staff, Andrew is both managing director and project coordinator for the maintenance, renovation and now new builds they do, both for themselves and for a growing clientele. Each project starts with a one-on-one consultation, whether it’s a major extension or a minor bathroom refit. Once Andrew understands what the client’s vision is, RenoMasters takes the project on and supplies the client with whatever they need in the way of drawings, plans, suggestions for the kitchen or bathroom fit-out, or whatever is required. They quote for the building services they provide, and organise all the subcontractors: plumber, tiler, roofing contractor, again, whatever’s needed. “We organise all of that on behalf of the owner, which means they have one point of contact, which is us, and we do everything else,” explains Andrew. “Communication is the key with the client, and also when you’re working with multiple subcontractors. All of our subbies are people I work with on our own properties, trusted people we know have the sort of eye for detail and reliable work that we’re after.” New bathrooms are something of a specialty, and Andrew has noticed a gradual move towards his preferred look of the more highend, fully tiled bathrooms. “While many of our clients would love to have them, some settle for the more standard Gib with acrylic shower stalls in the end, purely for financial reasons.” Andrew believes the market may be starting to turn, as the phone has started to ring again, with an extensive renovation due to start in August, a four-bedroom new build including solar panels in Central Dunedin expected to be completed by the end of August, and an extensive renovation project worth $250,000 getting underway, involving re-lining, insulation, and modernising with a new kitchen and bathroom. “We’ve been working with that client for three years, so it’s exciting to get that one moving forward with a full-service contract,” Andrew says. Dealing with tricky sites is no deterrent for RenoMasters. The current Central Dunedin build on reclaimed land required 17 up to nine-metre steel piles before they could even start the build proper.
